*Job Description *

NORC at the University of Chicago, an independent research organization
with more than 75 years of leadership and experience in data collection,
program evaluation, data analysis, and information dissemination, seeks a
Co-Director for the General Social Survey (GSS) one of the nation’s most
important sources of data.  Since 1972, the GSS has completed 31 in-person,
cross-sectional surveys of the US adult household population, interviewing
a total of approximately 62,500 respondents.  By using a strict,
full-probability sample design, rigorous field efforts, and extensive
quality control, the GSS produces a high-quality, representative sample of
US adults.

Besides carrying out its core mission of providing an empirical
longitudinal time series used to advance social-science theory, the GSS is
used in other fields of science, in education, and in society in general.
It was selected across all NSF science projects as one of "60 discoveries
or advances that NSF believes have led a large impact or influence on every
American’s life." The GSS is also used extensively used by academics,
government, not-for-profits, and the mass media.  It is the second most
cited data set (behind the US Census) in the peer-reviewed sociological
literature over the last 30 years.  The data are also used extensively in
education over 2,000 textbooks and teaching manuals utilize the GSS and it
is used by over 20,000 registered uses to the GSS Explorer Website which
disseminates the data.

 NORC seeks a proven leader with experience directing surveys who can build
on the substantial success of the GSS and help to lead the survey into the
future.  The GSS Director will be a NORC employee at the level of Senior
Research Scientist and report to the GSS Principal Investigator Tom W.

 *Responsibilities*

·     Managing the multiple components of a very large and complex survey
research project

·     Developing survey instruments and working with the GSS Board of
Overseers as they select modules for inclusion

·     Providing updates on the surveys progress to GSS PIs, NORC leadership
and the GSS board of Overseers

·     Providing methodological leadership to address operational components
of instrument development and testing, fielding of the survey, and
processing the survey data for delivery to the social science community

·     Leading the process to answer data user inquiries and questions about
methods and instruments used on the GSS surveys

·     Producing the GSS microdata for dissemination as well as the
methodological documentation for each year of GSS data; And ensuring its
integrity and quality

·     Providing supervision and technical assistance (methodological,
management, and substantive) GSS staff (e.g., Survey Directors, Survey
Specialists, Research Assistants) assigned to the project so that work is
accomplished according to high standards, on schedule, and within budget.

·     Acting as proposal director and writing and reviewing sections of
proposals for GSS funding

·     Management responsibilities such as staff development and mentorship,
providing technical assistance areas of expertise (either substantive or
methodological), career advice, and performance evaluations.

·     This position has significant supervisory responsibilities including
ultimate responsibility for the performance of the entire project team
(generally 1-3 direct reports and 10 indirect reports), the proposal team
(3-15 professional staff), and administrative supervisory responsibilities
for 3-5 Survey Directors, Survey Specialists, and Research Assistants.

*Required Skills *

·     PhD in social sciences or related field is strongly preferred

·     9 years’ experience in positions of increasing responsibility in
survey research or related field, with at least 1 years' experience in
project management and proposal development

·     Publication and conference presentation track record in the field of
survey methodology

·     Advanced knowledge of the principles, processes, and methods of
survey research through extensive reading in the literature and broad
experience in the field

·     Knowledge in at least one substantive or methodological area and
publication/reputation within that area; working knowledge of routine
sampling and statistical weighting procedures

·     Skills in quantitative analysis and in project management/proposal
direction

·     Working knowledge of computing platforms, data processing procedures,
and data file construction and management

·     Administrative experiences in dissemination of sensitive data

·     Candidates should have strong writing and interpersonal communication
skills

·     Supervision, leadership, and team building skills; and strong ability
in estimating project and proposal costs and evaluating cost and production
data
