International Survey Methodologist Organization Overview

Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public
about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It
conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content
analysis and other empirical social science research in the areas of U.S.
politics and policy views; media and journalism; internet and technology;
religion and public life; Hispanic trends; global attitudes and U.S. social
and demographic trends. Pew Research Center does not take policy positions.
It is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew Research Center’s work
is carried out by a staff of approximately 140.
Department Overview

The International Survey Methodologist is a position within Global
Attitudes team, which conducts worldwide public opinion surveys
encompassing a broad array of subjects, from people’s assessments of their
own lives to their views about the current state of the world and important
issues of the day.  Its major research topics include global attitudes
toward the U.S. and American foreign policy, views of China, global
economic attitudes, terrorism, and democracy. The Global Attitudes team
relies on area probability and random digit dial sample designs to achieve
nationally representative surveys in 40 or more countries each year. The
Global Attitudes team encourages experiments in sampling methods, survey
modes, and survey administration, as well as the design and use of paradata
for quality control.
Position Summary

The International Survey Methodologist works closely with the Director of
Global Attitudes Research and the Associate Director, Research in designing
and executing the Pew Research Center’s international research agenda. The
methodologist advises on survey design, sampling plans, weighting and
analytic strategies. The methodologist consults with the Pew Research
Center’s Director of Survey Research to ensure that all international
projects utilize the latest methods and are compliant with the Pew Research
Center’s standards for transparency, rigor and accuracy. The methodologist
helps to advance the Pew Research Center’s methodological research, through
the fielding of experiments, analysis of results and write-up of findings.
The methodologist is also responsible for assisting and training staff in
statistical analysis and monitoring of sample performance and fieldwork.

The methodologist position requires substantial knowledge and skill in
survey methodology – including various sampling frames, data collection
modes and questionnaire design – as well as extensive background in
statistics and statistical analysis. In applying this knowledge and skill,
the methodologist must apply analytic rigor, creativity, and a tireless
attention to detail and the highest standards of quality control. The
position also entails editorial judgment when interpreting and describing
data collection methods, survey findings and the results of methodological
experiments to diverse audiences. The Pew Research Center’s reputation for
straightforward explanation and assiduous impartiality is grounded in an
editorial style and institutional voice that must be applied consistently
by all researchers and writers at the Pew Research Center.  The position
reports to the Director, Global Attitudes Research and is supervised by the
Associate Director, Research.
Primary Responsibilities

*Methodology Research, Collaboration and Advising (60%)*

In consultation with the Director of Global Attitudes Research and
Associate Director, Research, provide methodological guidance to the Pew
Research Center’s international research projects.

Key Responsibilities include:

   - Overseeing the design of various survey projects across the
   organization
   - Consulting with research staff to provide methodological advice at
   various stages in the research process, including overall study design,
   sampling, questionnaire development, data collection, sample performance,
   analysis and reporting
   - Identifying field houses and vendors for research projects
   - Working with project managers to draft Requests for Information and
   Requests for Proposals
   - Reviewing RFP responses and consulting with project managers on
   awarding contracts
   - Working with project managers to draft contract materials, such as
   Statements of Work
   - Reviewing sampling designs and working with vendors to resolve issues
   and improve designs
   - Reviewing weighting approaches and working with vendors to resolve
   issues



*Planning, Development and Management of Methodological Research Agenda
(20%)*

Work closely with the Associate Director, Research in shaping and
implementing a methodological research agenda for the Pew Research Center.

Key Responsibilities include:

·         Assisting with the development and execution of a methodological
research agenda for the organization

·         Standardizing quality controls, design approaches, measurement
and data analysis across the organization’s international projects

·         Managing methodological projects from the background research and
framing of the project to the specific design, implementation and analysis

·         Reporting findings of methodological research in publications and
presentations for internal and external audiences

·         Applying knowledge from the latest developments in survey
methodology to help the organization maintain its reputation for being at
the forefront of international survey research



*Training and Staff Development (20%)*

The Research Methodologist works closely with all staff members, and seeks
opportunities to develop research skills, especially methodological and
statistical skills, among both junior and senior staff.


Education/Training/Experience

·         M.A. degree in survey methodology, statistics or quantitative
social science field is required, PhD preferred

·         International survey research experience in applied setting

·         Established background in survey methods and statistical analysis

·         Established background in applied survey development and analysis

·         Track record of successful project management experience

·         Established record of publication and/or editorial performance

Knowledge, Skill and Workplace Requirements

·         Strong quantitative and statistical skills, including strong
facility with SPSS, Stata and other statistical tools

·         Experience in using advanced statistical analysis techniques,
such as logistic regression, hierarchical linear models, experimental
design, etc.

·         Experience in designing first- and second-stage weights for
complex samples strongly preferred

·         Detail oriented with exacting standards to maintain accuracy and
impartiality in all work products

·         Ability to work independently to carry out special projects from
start to finish

·         Ability to balance numerous tasks simultaneously

·         Background in social science research, especially survey and
other social science methods

·         Clear capacity to train and develop skills in coworkers

·         Ability to work well in a team setting and take a leadership role
in managing the work of colleagues when needed

·         Skilled in project development and management

·         Editorial judgment and proven ability to communicate research
methodology and survey results clearly and concisely
