Dear graduate coordinators and advisors:

In addition to the job announcement that I forwarded to your center in
February 2018, the Demographic Research Unit is looking for one trainee
position
<http://www.dof.ca.gov/About_Us/Careers/Career_Opportunities/documents/RPS_II_GEN_LT_DEMO_2-21-2018.pdf>
on part-time basis. Please consider sharing the following job announcement
with interested students or recent graduates. These jobs were recently
posted on the ASA Job Bank and PAA job board, but we are also reaching out
directly to a number of departments and centers in order to reach as wide
an audience as possible.

I’m happy to follow up with any questions by personal email or the unit
email (below).

Thanks for the consideration—
Phuong

HIRING ANNOUNCEMENT

The California Department of Finance <http://www.dof.ca.gov/> is seeking
qualified candidates to fill TWO research positions in applied demography.
The Demographic Research Unit serves as the State of California’s source of
official, unbiased demographic data for planning and budgeting, and is the
designated statewide liaison with the U.S. Census Bureau.

If you're interested in population growth, aging, migration, fertility, or
health-- and in crunching data and building visualizations to investigate
and communicate your insights on these subjects, then we encourage you to
consider sending in an application.

Additional details are available in the full postings at the URLs below.
The state hiring process can be cumbersome so please reach out with any
questions about eligibility or the application process. We’re happy to
correspond personally with any interested candidates by email at
ficalpop at dofca.gov.

(1) Full-time position. URL: http://www.populationassociation.org/job/
demographer-3/

This full-time position is within the state population estimates group,
where the incumbent will participate in the production of state, county,
and city population and housing projections. This is a full time job with
excellent work/life balance: use it as a springboard while building your
skills, or stay and make a career.

(2) Traineeship. URL: http://www.populationassociation.org/job/
demographer-trainee/

This part-time/term-limited position requires the ability to work remotely
with occasional travel for in-person meetings. The incumbent will design
and conduct research projects with minimal supervision. The project(s) may
be part of a thesis, term paper or project, or dissertation that engages
with issues relevant to the past, present, or future demography of
California. The position is initially a one year traineeship, with the
possibility of renewal.

ABOUT US

Finance has a high profile within the state government and our work
frequently branches across agencies to inform budget and policy decisions.
The Demographic Research Unit is a group of 10-12 researchers specializing
in Census, survey, vital statistics, housing, and population data. There's
a lot of room to be creative here and rewards for taking initiative. We
have great datasets and a lot less red tape than you'd expect. We are eager
to bring in people with new ideas and passion to produce great social
science.

We’re an hour from the SF Bay, 90 minutes from wine country, and two hours
from the Sierras. The Sacramento area is one of the fastest growing metro
areas in California and there's a lot to do in the city and environs.
