*NIST is hiring a Social Scientist to work on Community Resilience! *This
position is with the Community Resilience Group in the Materials and
Structural Systems Division of the Engineering Laboratory at NIST. The
incumbent will provide expertise on social science methodologies,
geospatial dynamics, and issues related to community resilience. They may
also lead development of models, tools, guidance and standards for
community resilience and associated decision making.

*Responsibilities*

The Research Social Scientist will play a critical role in building a
vibrant and innovative research program focused on providing communities
with the science-based tools and guidance they need to improve their
resilience performance. The candidate will join NIST's world-class research
team in Community Resilience and will be responsible for developing,
conducting, and reporting on research in the field of social science for
community resilience. The candidate will collaborate with the
NIST-sponsored Community Resilience Center of Excellence, and participate
in national and international collaborations, workshops, seminars,
engagement with communities implementing resilience strategies, and the
development of relevant models, tools, metrics, codes, standards, and
guidance supporting community resilience planning and implementation. For

The Research Social Scientist will provide technical expertise, guidance,
and recommended direction on resilience-related social science, including
the development and application of new methodologies for characterizing the
interconnectedness of social and physical systems; the application of
sociology of place concepts to the measurement of community recovery; the
use of spatial analysis techniques for linking physical and social systems
data; and the integration of hazard models, social vulnerability
assessments, and valuation studies (including both social and economic
valuation) for the purpose of developing community resilience metrics and
models.

The candidate will support the development and validation of systems-based
assessment methodologies and decision support tools, including simulation
and optimization modeling and collecting, analyzing, and archiving data.
The Research Social Scientist will also participate in field studies and
disaster reconnaissance data collection for model input and validation data
as needed.
