I. POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Assistant Director/Senior Research Associate will serve as the
number-two leader of this applied research center with an extensive range
of national and local studies and consulting projects. NIMC focuses broadly
on issues of promoting equity and inclusion in urban America with a
specific focus on mixed-income developments and neighborhoods. NIMC’s four
main functions are research and evaluation, information provision,
convening and brokering, and consultation (see nimc.case.edu for more
detail). The primary role of the Assistant Director is to manage day-to-day
operations of the center as well as advance NIMC’s implementation of the
5-year strategic plan which will be finalized in mid-2017. This includes
supervising the NIMC team, supporting fundraising and development, and
managing the center’s administrative and financial operations. The
Assistant Director will also be involved in selected research and
evaluation studies, consulting engagements, writing articles and reports,
presenting at conferences and representing NIMC in meetings with funders,
project partners and other key stakeholders.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Manage the day-to-day operations at NIMC, in general consultation with
NIMC’s Director.
• Supervise NIMC staff.
• Advance and track the implementation of NIMC’s strategic plan.
• Manage NIMC’s finances in conjunction with department administrator and
school’s finance and grants staff.
• Support fundraising, including grant proposal development and
solicitation of gifts in conjunction with the Director and the University’s
donor relations office.
• Support marketing and communications in conjunction with the Mandel
School’s communications staff.
• Participate in research projects, advising research design and
methodology, and overseeing data collection and analysis.
• Participate in technical assistance and consulting projects, cultivating
client relationships, advising project design, engaging in assessment and
consultation.
• Co-author academic papers and project reports. Develop materials for
public presentations. Make presentations at conferences and other
convenings.
• Other duties as assigned.

III. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
None

IV. CONTACTS

A. Within the department
This position requires daily contact working closely with faculty, and
other research staff within NIMC, the Poverty Center, and MSASS.

B. Within the university:
This position has regular contact with staff from other university research
centers, library staff and technical support staff.

C. External to the university:
Direct, daily contact with personnel at project partners locally,
regionally, and nationally. Frequent contact with the media.

D. Students:
Daily supervision of NIMC staff and students working on NIMC projects,
including both undergraduate and graduate research assistants.

V. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervision of NIMC staff and graduate-level student research assistants.

VI. REQUIREMENTS

A. Experience
5-8 years of experience in a social science or public policy research
environment, including experience in research design, data collection, data
analysis and report writing. 3-5 years’ experience managing research
projects. Strong knowledge base of comprehensive community development,
neighborhood revitalization, affordable housing policy, anti-poverty
initiatives necessary. Familiarity with mixed-income development a plus.
University research administration experience preferred. Applied research,
consulting or technical assistance experience preferred.

B. Education
Earned doctorate in urban studies, social work, political science,
sociology, public health, public policy, or a related social science
research discipline is required.

C. Essential skills
1. Strong organizational planning, management and advancement.
2. Strong supervision, mentoring and professional development.
3. Strong research and project administration.
4. Expertise in research and evaluation design, especially in applied
research.
5. Excellent writing skills.
6. Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal and presentation
skills.
7. Demonstrated skill successfully managing multiple research and/or
consulting projects.
8. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with team members
and students.
9. Ability to work with a high degree of independence to find effective
solutions for complex and challenging problems.
10. Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with
multiple partners and constituencies.

D. Technical skills
Experience and familiarity with Windows-based personal computers including
statistical software, word processing, database and spreadsheet programs is
necessary.
Experience developing and managing budgets and monitoring cash flow.
Experience with social media and communications.

VII. WORKING CONDITIONS

Complex and bureaucratic university research environment. The Assistant
Director/Senior Research Associate will be required to attend occasional
evening and weekend meetings. Out of town travel will also be required.
Comfort in urban neighborhoods and working with socioeconomically diverse
populations is required.
