Dear colleagues,

I'm happy to announce a job opening for a survey methodologist or
survey-savvy social scientist to join the staff of the American National
Election Studies (ANES) at Stanford University.

*About the ANES*

The ANES is the best-known and most widely cited ongoing study of how
Americans participate in elections, form attitudes, make political choices,
and are influenced by campaigns. Since 1948 the ANES has interviewed tens
of thousands of Americans in nationally representative surveys. ANES data
are a canonical source of individual-level information about the American
electorate, and more than 6,000 books, journal articles, and conference
papers rely on ANES data.

ANES is funded by the National Science Foundation, with one of the largest
grants in the social sciences, with a mandate to carefully document and
freely distribute the ANES data.

ANES is a close collaboration between Stanford University and the
University of Michigan. Our major projects in the 2015-2017 period include
two forms of data collection: a face-to-face survey with hour-long
interviews conducted both before and after the November 2016 elections and
an innovative Internet survey administering the same questionnaire to a
nationally representative sample recruited by mail to take the survey
online. To learn more about the ANES, visit our website:
www.electionstudies.org

*The Work *We are seeking a researcher to join our Stanford-based staff and
to contribute to many aspects of running the ANES. Our work involves quite
a few activities.

We develop questionnaires. We receive proposals from researchers (mostly
professors and graduate students) suggesting particular research agendas to
be pursued in the questionnaires; we evaluate those proposals and provide
feedback to the proposers, sometimes requesting revised proposals. We test
questionnaires to assure that they are effective measurement tools. We
adapt questionnaires originally developed for face-to-face interviewing to
run on the Internet. We may soon adapt such questionnaires for a mail
survey and for mobile devices.

We also conduct methodological research to improve the ANES. We develop and
refine new methods to select and recruit representative samples of
respondents to complete surveys online. We match survey respondents to
voter files.

We also oversee data collection and disseminate data. We write study
documentation and provide support to a large community of data users. We
edit data files, analyze data, supervise data collection firms, run a web
site, manage a budget, and generate reports for the research community, the
ANES Board, Stanford and Michigan and the NSF.

Our new staff member will work collaboratively with the study’s Principal
Investigators (Simon Jackman and Gary Segura at Stanford and Vincent
Hutchings and Ted Brader at Michigan), professional staff, one or two
post-doctoral fellows, and research assistants.

The new staff member’s work will include:

* Working collaboratively with an intellectually diverse team of
researchers.
* Writing, editing, and reviewing questionnaires and their programming
specifications.
* Testing computer implementation of questionnaires.
* Reviewing and analyzing data files using statistical software.
* Preparing data files for public release.
* Writing, editing, and reviewing survey documentation and reports.
* Reviewing and designing methods for survey data collection.
* Managing and monitoring the activities of firms doing data collection.
* Supervising student research assistants.
* Managing administrative tasks for the project.
* Coauthoring journal articles for publication.
* Collaborating with ANES personnel at the University of Michigan.

*Qualifications *(desirable but not all required)

*Advanced degree in a social science (e.g., political science, psychology,
sociology, communication, economics), survey methodology, or statistics,
with an emphasis on using statistical methods in social-science settings
*Experience conducting empirical research in the social sciences
*Proficiency using software for data analysis (e.g., Stata, R, SPSS), with
an emphasis on data management
*Proficiency with scripting languages (e.g., Perl, Python) would be nice
*Experience planning and conducting surveys
*Experience writing articles for academic journal publication
*Expertise in one or more of the following areas: American politics, survey
sampling, statistical data analysis, statistical programming, questionnaire
design, research methodology, project management
*Proven ability to work to deadline and work well in a dynamic,
collaborative environment

*Term position*

The position is an exempt, term appointment for two years from
approximately July, 2015 through June, 2017. The possibility of extension
after June 2017, if any, depends on staffing needs and budget availability.
The position includes a wide range of benefits, and Stanford is a wonderful
place to work.

*How to apply*

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is
filled. To assure full consideration, apply by Monday, May 25th.

Please submit both a cover letter and a CV or resume. If you finished your
degree within the last 2 years, it would be helpful if you are also able to
attach a copy of your transcript. Apply online at the URL below and add
your cover letter to the "Additional Attachments" section.
