Position Announcement – University of Minnesota, Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology and the Department of Geography, Environment &
Society at the University of Minnesota invite applications for a full-time,
nine-month, tenure-track position specializing in Health & Population, to
begin fall semester 2016 (August 29, 2016). Appointment will be at the rank
of tenure-track assistant professor. This position will be a joint
appointment in the Departments of Sociology and Geography, Environment &
Society, with the tenure home decided by the chosen candidate in
consultation with the chairs of the two departments. The percentage of work
effort devoted to each unit will be determined in consultation with the
candidate, but is expected to be approximately 50% in each unit.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Candidates will be expected to maintain an
active program of scholarly research; develop and teach undergraduate and
graduate courses; advise students; and contribute service appropriate for
the rank of appointment to the department, college, university, and
profession. Salary is competitive.



REQUIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Sociology, Geography, or a
related field is required. Advanced ABD's may be considered for appointment
at the rank of tenure-track instructor, with the understanding that the
Ph.D. is conferred in the first year of appointment.



Applicants will be evaluated based on research excellence in the area of
Health & Population.  Expertise in GIScience, spatial demography,
population-environment dynamics, law, or inequality desired. We welcome
candidates whose dossiers demonstrate interdisciplinary scholarly
distinction and who demonstrate potential for collaboration with other
units on campus, such as the Minnesota Population Center and the School of
Public Health.  A focus on Latin America, and/or Africa is preferred,
though U.S. or other regional expertise will also be considered. We welcome
applicants versed in diverse theoretical and methodological approaches.
Candidates will be evaluated according to a) overall quality of their
academic preparation and scholarly work, b) relevance of their scholarly
research to the tenure home department's academic priorities and fields of
inquiry, c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and
d) strength of recommendations.

Position Announcement – Cal State Dominguez Hills, Department of Sociology



The Department of Sociology invites applications for a full-time tenure
track Assistant Professor with specialization in one of more of the
following areas, Sociology of the Family and Aging and the Life Course, an
emphasis on racial minorities is preferred. Secondary emphasis may include:
race relations, community health, immigration, and/or social inequality.
Experience in working with a population of students such as ours at CSUDH,
which is a federally recognized Minority Serving Institution, is highly
preferred. Given the university and departmental commitment to serve our
communities, special consideration will be given to candidates whose
scholarship is relevant to urban environments and reflects working with
diverse community organizations. A critical dimension of this position is
an understanding of the complex relationships of race, class, gender,
sexuality and citizenship. The Sociology Department at CSUDH builds its
academic programs around ʺSociology in Service to Community.” Thus, ideal
applicants are those who engage undergraduate and graduate students in
research and service learning Grant writing experience is a plus.



Responsibilities: Teaching expectations include undergraduate and graduate
level courses in the following areas, Family and Aging. Faculty will have
the opportunity to develop more advance courses that involve internships
and research with community based organizations. Given our student
population, candidate’s teaching methods must address issues of academic
preparation by providing structured course materials and hands-on teaching
strategies. The Sociology Department requires faculty to provide academic
advisement,

participate in department and university service, and to develop strong
scholarly research resulting in scholarly publications.



Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in Sociology or a closely related field at
the time of the appointment. Demonstrate ability to provide high quality
curricular and instructional service to students. Demonstrate an active
research agenda. Demonstrate commitment to help build our “sociology in
service to community” vision within the department, the university, and the
larger community.
