Subject: Max Plank Institute of Demographic Research. PhD (up to 2),
Post-Doctoral Fellow (up to 2), and Research Scientist levels

The newly established Max Planck Research Group Gender Gaps in Health and Survival
at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) is seeking to make
appointments at
PhD (up to 2), Post-Doctoral Fellow (up to 2), and Research Scientist levels.

Deadline for applications: December 31, 2014

Men die, women suffer: that is what is called the male– female health– survival
paradox. At all ages, women live longer but they have lower physical performance,
more physical disabilities, and other adverse health outcomes than men. Research on
sex differences in health and mortality has proliferated, yet to date there is still
no full understanding of whether behavioral factors explain most of the gender gap
or whether biological and social differences contribute more substantially to
explaining sex differences in health and survival. We investigate (1) how universal
the male – female health – survival paradox is across different countries, (2) which
biological, demographic, and social factors drive the male – female health –
survival paradox. The research interests of the group also embrace health trends in
the old-aged populations, cohort differences in health at older ages and related
topics.

The research of the group is multidisciplinary. Applicants for the post-doc and
research scientist positions should have completed a PhD in epidemiology/public
health, demography, statistics or related fields. Candidates for the post-doc
positions may have a PhD near completion (e.g.  submitted). All applicants should
have a keen interest in health and mortality and a solid knowledge of statistical
methods.

The MPIDR has an international working environment and a pleasant working
atmosphere. A good command of written English is essential as the Institute’s
working language is English.

The PhD position is for 3 years. The Post-doc and Research Scientist appointments
are initially for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Post-doc appointments
are made on postdoctoral stipends or salaries according to qualification at the
salary level 13-14 of the German TVöD system. The payment for research scientists is
up to the level 14 of the German TVöD system according to qualification and in
accordance with the rules of federal employees in Germany.

Applications should include:

• a detailed CV (incl. honors, awards, and publications),

• full contact information (e-mail and mail addresses) of 2 references,

• for the post-doc and research scientist positions: a 2-page outline about the

research agenda for the upcoming two years

Applications should be sent to the head of the research group, Anna Oksuzyan
(please, in one pdf file):

appl-mprg-gg at demogr.mpg.de .

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. Please submit applications by
December 31, 2014 to ensure consideration. Review of applications will continue
until the position is filled. The positions are available from February 1, 2015 and
should start as soon as feasible. The first consideration will be given to the
candidates who are able to start at an earlier point in time.

The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the share of women in areas where they are
underrepresented, and strongly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck Society is
committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them
