Brown University announces a likely opening for one or more Postdoctoral
Research Associates
that may be of interest to social demographers and human geographers. The
starting date is
flexible, but could be as early as June 1, 2014. The initial appointment
will be for a one-year
term that may be renewed for a second year. Candidates with a Ph.D. in hand
are preferred, but
those near completion of their dissertation may be considered.
The Research Associate will participate in a variety of research projects
supported by external
grants and directed by Dr. John Logan through the Spatial Structures in the
Social Sciences
(S4) research initiative. These studies examine the residential and labor
market incorporation
of immigrants and minorities in U.S. cities at the end of the 19th
Century making use of 100% population microdata. The projects have a major
geographical
component that includes drawing historically accurate GIS street maps of
major cities,
identifying enumeration district boundaries, and geocoding individual
addresses. Projects
include: 1) examination of Bayesian models to improve small area
estimation, 2) identification
of neighborhoods based on race, ethnicity and class composition, 2) studies
of neighborhood
change and segregation trends over time, and 4) analyses of individuals’
recruitment into specific
locations. The position requires familiarity with GIS and spatial analysis
methods; experience
working with census data and similar large-scale datasets is helpful.
The Research Associate will be affiliated with the Population Studies and
Training Center
(www.pstc.brown.edu) and will have access to the considerable PSTC research
infrastructure.
Salary will be based on current NIH guidelines that depend on the
experience/credentials of the
appointee and will include health benefits. Contingent on successful grant
applications, review
of applications will begin on March 1
To apply please go to http://apply.interfolio.com/24249 The initial
deadline for applications is February 15, 2014, but will remain open after
that until the position is filled.
