OBJECTIVES: The aim of the fellowship is to foster collaboration
between NCHS staff and visiting scholars on a wide range of topics of
mutual concern. The fellowship allows visiting scholars to conduct new
and innovative analyses and participate in developmental and health
policy activities related to the design and content of future NCHS
surveys.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants may be at any stage in their career from doctoral
students (who must have completed course work and be at the
dissertation phase of their program) to senior investigators.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a green card. Applicants must
demonstrate training and/or experience in health services research and
its methodology, especially quantitative data analysis, reflecting
disciplines such as public health, public administration, health care
administration, statistics, sociology, economics, behavioral sciences,
or the health professions (e.g., medicine, nursing, dentistry,
pharmacology, etc.)
FUNDING
Salaries are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Doctoral student fellows may qualify for salaries based on a
GS-9/11/12 civil service equivalent, which in 2012 ranged from $51,630
to $ 97,333. Post-doctoral, health professional, and faculty fellows
may come to NCHS as service fellows or on an Interagency Personnel
Agreement (IPA). The maximum salary for a senior service fellow would
be the highest category for a GS-15, which was $155,500 in 2012. An
alternative in some cases may be an IPA negotiated with the fellow's
home institution. The salary that the fellowship would cover in the
IPA is usually the same as that which the investigator earns at
his/her home institution. However, the maximum salary that the
fellowship would cover under an IPA is the maximum that the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) would reimburse an investigator on a grant;
this is $196,700 in 2012.
