Research Scientist - AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research

Job Description

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research is seeking a
qualified Research Scientist to manage public opinion research projects in a
fast paced environment.  The position's primary responsibilities include
project management and budgeting; questionnaire development on a range of
social and economic issues; serving as a liaison between the Center and
project stakeholders including subject matter experts and funders; oversight
of the data collection, data cleaning and file preparation process, survey
data analysis, and report writing. The Research Scientist may work from
NORC's offices in Bethesda, MD; Chicago, IL; or Boston, MA.

Responsibilities

- Manage survey research projects in a fast-paced environment including
scheduling the project's workflow, monitoring the project budget, overseeing
questionnaire and materials design, planning and executing data collection
and delivery, and reporting on costs and progress

- Organize and supervise the day-to-day work of the research staff team and
coaching junior staff members

- Articulate project goals to a range of stakeholders including survey
operations and methodology staff, funders, and junior research staff

- Ensure project grant requirements are continually met

- Work on questionnaire content and design, bringing an understanding of the
literature and seminal research of the substantive field to the design of
the instrument

- Analyze data collected in accordance with professional standards

- Participate in writing publication quality research reports

- Assist with the design of experiments and other methodological research
for data collection efforts

- This position also has responsibilities for developing grant applications,
generally contributing to sections in which understanding of the substantive
area is vital and in assisting with communications with funders,
consultants, and members of the research community

Qualifications

-Masters' or Doctoral degree in social or behavioral sciences including
political science, psychology, sociology, and economics -Candidates should
have experience with the design and execution of social science research and
in publishing research results, with a strong career-appropriate record of
peer-reviewed or technical publications

- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures of survey research is
required

- The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge of the basic
principles of the survey design, regression analysis and causal modeling in
the social sciences, sampling, standard statistical software packages
(STATA, SAS or SPSS), and quantitative data file construction

- Experience with estimating project and proposal costs is a plus

- The candidate must have very good oral and written communication skills
and a strong orientation toward working in teams and coordinating work with
other teams
