Chair and Unit in Social Change

The South African Research Chair in Social Change is funded by the
Department of Science and Technology, administered by the National Research
Foundation and hosted by the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The unit
associated with the Chair is located within UJ's Faculty of Humanities,
where it has the status of a research centre. Physically it is situated in
the Research Village on UJ's Bunting Road campus. All successful applicants
will join a vibrant team of researchers associated with a prestigious
research chair. The chairholder is Prof. Peter Alexander, who has a PhD in
History from the University of London and is a Professor of Sociology. The
unit also includes Dr Marcelle Dawson, who holds a DPhil in Politics from
the University of Oxford and is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology, and Dr Luke
Sinwell, who has a PhD in Development Studies from the University of
Witwatersrand and is a Senior Researcher.

Research focus

The chair focuses on social inequality and social change from below,
especially in South Africa. It is interdisciplinary. Research on the
rebellion of the poor, social movements, strikes, household dynamics and
churches are regarded as priorities. Cross-national studies are encouraged,
but one component should be South African. Prof. Alexander's interests
include comparative labour history, race and class, and social and political
protests. Drs Dawson and Sinwell focus their research on social movements.
Other current research in the unit includes alternative economic strategies,
oral histories of mineworkers, social entrepreneurship, teachers' unions and
the state in Ghana and South Africa, ward counsellors, the meaning of
blackness, and South African film-maker identities.

One doctoral student will work under the supervision of Dr Marcelle Dawson;
all other positions are linked with Professor Peter Alexander. Post-doctoral
Research Fel-lows (PDRFs), Dr Dawson's doctoral student and both MA students
will commence as soon as possible. Prof. Alexander's doctoral student and
both MA students will begin in January 2013. PDRFs can be any nationality;
doctoral and MA bursars are preferably South Africans, but other
nationalities are considered; honours bursars must be South Africans from
previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Chair in Social Change is inter-disciplinary and students with any
relevant background will be consid-ered. The Chair is especially interested
in social change from below, but wishes to recruit one Post-doctoral
Research Fellow interested in welfare and the state.

For further details contact Lucinda Becorny on 011 559 4251 or
llanden at uj.ac.za. Applications should include a letter of motivation, a cv

Research Fellows). Send application to llanden at uj.ac.za by 21st June 2012.

Kind regards,
Lucinda
