Abt SRBI:  Survey Statistician Opening

Abt SRBI, the survey arm of Abt Associates, is seeking a survey
statistician to develop sampling and weighting designs for large-scale
complex surveys.  This position is based in the Abt SRBI Advanced
Methods Group, which provides statistical consulting on a range of
academic, media, and federal projects.  Location is flexible as Abt SRBI
has offices in New York, NY, Cambridge, MA, Chicago, IL, Silver Spring,
MD, Fort Myers, FL, or Durham, NC. This is a new position resulting from
significant growth in our public policy practices.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include developing sample designs for complex surveys,
identifying strategies for sampling rare populations, working with large
federal public use datasets, developing weighting protocols for complex
surveys (including creation of replicate weights), performing
model-based imputation, implementing quality control procedures to
ensure the accuracy of sampling procedures, calculating standard errors
and design effects, and providing thought leadership through
methodological research. This position also involves working with
clients on sample design, communicating the strength and weaknesses of
various sampling strategies, and representing Abt SRBI at research
conferences (e.g., the Joint Statistical Meetings).

Required Skills and Knowledge

The successful candidate will have the following:

- Ph.D.,, ABD or Master's degree in statistics, survey methodology, or
quantitative social science field. Master's-level applicants should have
prior experience working on complex surveys outside of a classroom
setting.

- Strong SAS or Stata programming skills

- Working knowledge of sampling strategies under a range of survey
designs (e.g., telephone RDD, ABS, listed samples, cell, web, multiple
sampling frames);

- Ability to design weights for samples featuring stratification,
clustering, multiple stages of selection, and/or unequal probabilities
of selection;

- Working knowledge of repeated replication techniques and Taylor Series
linearization;

- Ability to use complex survey software for imputation and variance
estimation;

- Strong writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills;

- Demonstrated ability to conduct methodological research.
