The Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa
Barbara invites applications for a position in social demography
(broadly construed) at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek a
scholar who could help build a strong sociological presence in UCSB’s
new interdisciplinary Broom Center for Demography and increase the
Department’s teaching capacity in quantitative methodology. The ideal
candidate will have an active research agenda, a strong commitment to
quality teaching, and a substantive research agenda that contributes to
one or more of the Department’s core areas of strength. The following
demographic phenomena are of particular interest: national and
transnational migrant flows; racial, ethnic, gender, and economic
inequalities; trends in sexual behavior, marriage and family structures;
trends and inequalities in crime and punishment; trends and inequalities
in health and psychological well-being; divisions of labor within
households and workplaces; and processes of national and transnational
diffusion (e.g., of cultural beliefs and identity categories, social and
consumption practices, organizational forms, laws and regulations,
collective action and movements).

We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the
diversity and excellence of the academic community through research,
teaching, and service. Applications received before October 15, 2011
