Subject: NCHS Branch Chief Announcement
The National Center for Health Statistics is seeking an
exceptional candidate for Branch Chief:
This position is located in the Data Analysis and Quality
Assurance Branch (DAQAB), Division of Health Interview
Statistics (DHIS), National Center for Health Statistics,
Hyattsville, Maryland. DHIS is the division that conducts
the National Health Interview Survey (among other surveys).
The incumbent serves as Chief of the DAQAB and as a member of
the DHIS management team, providing expertise in the
collection, analysis, and interpretation of health interview
data. The incumbent is also responsible for planning,
developing, and directing a comprehensive research program at
the Branch level on the health of the U.S. civilian
non-institutionalized population, to identify and monitor
population health trends and their impact on meeting national
health objectives. The incumbent oversees the investigation
of data quality and data integrity, and provides
authoritative advice and guidance to senior program and
management officials in the Division, NCHS, CDC, DHHS, and
other Federal and state agencies on the use of health
interview statistics data in assessing the prevalence and
incidence of disease and associated disabilities, health
status, health-related behaviors, health insurance status,
health care utilization, and other health and well-being
topics.

Potential candidates should have a substantial record of
accomplishments in one of more of the fields of statistics,
health care, demography, epidemiology, sociology, economics,
survey methodology, health services research, information
technology, or a related discipline, and they should have a
strong record showing the ability to lead staff, conduct
health-related research studies, evaluate the quality of and
analyze data from large national health surveys, prepare
their own and review others’ papers and reports for
presentation to professional groups and publication in
professional journals and elsewhere, and serve as an
authoritative advisor and consultant to top public and
private officials.
This is an interdisciplinary position, and may be established
and filled as:
· Supervisory Statistician (Health), GS-1530(31)-15;
· Supervisory Health Scientist, GS-601(31)-15; or
· Supervisory Behavioral Scientist, GS-101(31)-15.
