Position Requirements
The Department of Sociology at Portland State University
(www.sociology.pdx.edu) invites applications for an Assistant Professor
faculty position to begin September 2012. (Ph.D. required.)
* The successful applicant will have a focus in minority health and
equity, with the specific focus within that area open.
* The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of
intersections among race/ethnicity, class, and gender in their research and
teaching.
* Special consideration will be given to applicants with interest in
the social determinants of health.
* The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and
graduate level courses in minority health and equity, conduct an active
research program, secure external funding for research, supervise graduate
students, and participate in collaborative projects within the department as
well as with relevant colleagues outside of the department.
* The successful candidate will play a significant part in shaping our
newly established Ph.D. program and will contribute to the existing
Bachelors and Masters level curricula.
Portland State University is located in downtown Portland, the major urban
center of Oregon. PSU is not only the largest institution of higher
education in Oregon, but with a 25% minority student population it is also
the most diverse. The University is built along the tree-lined South Park
Blocks, an extensive greenway through the center of the city, and is
immediately adjacent to the Portland cultural district, home of the Portland
Symphony, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Portland Art
Museum, and the Northwest Film Center. The city is noted for its numerous
cafes, pubs, theaters, restaurants, bookstores, and its public
transportation. The wide variety of outdoor activities convenient to the
city is unsurpassed. Hiking, mountain biking, skiing, sailing, windsurfing,
and kayaking are all accessible within minutes of Portland. The nearby
rugged Cascade and Coast mountain ranges provide hundreds of miles of trails
while the Pacific coast is less than two hours away.
Compensation
The starting annual salary for this position is dependent upon
qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including
fully paid healthcare, a generous retirement package, and reduced tuition
rates for the employee, spouse or one dependent at any of the Oregon
University System Schools.
