The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Liberal
Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the
position of Assistant Professor of Sociology.  Georgia Southern
University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the
University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research
University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential
university serving more than 19,000 students in fall 2009, Georgia
Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major
university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in
1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online
degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels
through eight colleges. The nearly 700 acre park-like campus is
located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic
Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology is
committed to excellence in research, teaching, service, and to
preparing students for success in a global economy.  The degree
programs in sociology and anthropology are designed to foster
intellectual development in logical thinking, literacy, numeracy,
historical consciousness, scientific inquiry, diversity, and social
values.  The successful candidate for this position will contribute to
the department’s mission by teaching existing undergraduate courses in
sociology (such as aging and death and dying) and by developing new
courses that might be used to create a graduate certificate program in
gerontology.

Position Description. Reporting to the department chair, the assistant
professor of sociology will be expected to teach introduction to
sociology, as well as gerontology/aging courses.  In addition to these
teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is expected to
hold a terminal degree and be an active member of the department and
university community as demonstrated by pursuing an active research
agenda, by serving on committees, and by advising students. The
position is a tenure-track, 9-month appointment, and the salary is
competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
•       Earned doctorate in Sociology or Gerontology (or closely
related field with minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in sociology)
by August 1, 2011
•       Academic background and expertise to teach Introduction to
Sociology and sociology courses in Gerontology/Aging

Preferred Qualifications:
•       Potential for attracting external funding
•       Prior college teaching experience

Screening of applications begins September 15, 2010, and
continues until the position is filled. Position starting date is
Augusta 1, 2011. A complete application consists of a letter
addressing the qualifications cited above; a curriculum vitae; and the
names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of at least
three professional references. Other documentation may be requested.
Georgia Southern University seeks to recruit individuals who are
committed to working in diverse academic and professional communities.
