The Opportunity

The University of Iowa seeks an individual of
distinguished scholarly achievement and administrative accomplishment to
serve as dean of the College of Public Health. As the senior academic
officer, the dean is responsible for providing visionary and innovative
leadership to a dynamic and engaged college. As the senior executive
officer, the dean will generate resources to support its mission, manage
its operations, and exercise authority over its programs and budget.

The dean will advance the educational, research, and
public health missions of the college, working within a system of shared
governance with the college’s leadership team, faculty, staff, and
students, with the University of Iowa, and with core external
constituencies.

About the College of Public Health

The University of Iowa College of Public Health is a
comprehensive public health resource for the state of Iowa, the nation,
and the world. Ranked among the nation’s top 10 publicly-supported
schools of public health, the college combines outstanding educational
programs, an entrepreneurial and well-funded research enterprise, and
extensive community engagement.

Founded in 1999, the College of Public Health is the
newest college at the University of Iowa, and the only accredited school
of public health in the state of Iowa. The college’s 80 primary faculty
are based in five academic departments: biostatistics, community and
behavioral health, epidemiology, health management and policy, and
occupational and environmental health. More than 400 students are
enrolled in the college’s highly successful and well-established
graduate programs: the Master of Public Health, Master of Health
Administration, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy. A new
undergraduate program began enrolling bachelor’s degree students in fall
2016.

The college’s highly productive research enterprise is
fueled by a resourceful spirit and strong research infrastructure,
including an array of well-established and multi-disciplinary federal
research centers, strong partnerships with state agencies, numerous
pilot grant programs that nurture exploratory research, robust faculty
mentoring initiatives, and a campus culture of collaboration.

As Iowa, the United States, and the world confront
fundamental challenges connected to health — such as an aging population
and other major demographic and economic shifts, climate change,
increasing globalization, and the emergence of new infectious diseases —
the faculty, students, and staff of the college are dedicated to
addressing these grand challenges and assuming a leadership role in
shaping the future of public health.

giving special attention to the recruitment and retention of women and
individuals from under-represented groups. The dean will promote a
welcoming and inclusive environment and uphold the college’s core value
of social justice.

Provide leadership for educational programs.
The dean will provide visionary leadership to continue the development
of a new undergraduate program and to strengthen existing graduate and
professional degree programs. The dean will have a key oversight role
in accreditation, program review, and other processes that support
continuous improvement of the college’s educational activities.

Advance public health research. The
dean will serve as a thought leader and champion for multidisciplinary
research that advances public health science. The dean will promote an

will recruit and develop faculty to enhance the college’s robust
research enterprise, promote a national and international reputation for
excellence, and produce well-prepared graduate students for research
careers.

Enrich collaborations across departments and with other colleges and programs.
The dean will strengthen the already significant collaborations among
researchers across departments within the college and across the
University and explore new opportunities that will effectively leverage
the expertise of participating faculty and graduate students.

Steward and develop new community relationships.
