This position is open in terms of substantive area in sociology but
requires a focus on data science (broadly defined, for example this might
include working on “big data,” network analysis, complex data sets, spatial
analysis or computational sociology). The position could build on existing
departmental strengths in the areas of education, healthcare and medicine,
demography, and urban sociology, but could add or enhance other areas (such
as sociology of culture, historical sociology, or environmental
sociology). <br>

The successful candidate will teach courses in their subfield within
sociology and will broaden quantitative offerings in sociology including
courses engaging data science students from other disciplines. They may
also teach required sociology courses as needed by the department or
courses specifically designed for data science students. They will also
participate in interdisciplinary data science initiatives across the
College, some pieces of which are housed in sociology and engage sociology
students. Depending on background, interest, and rank this may include
creating courses, curriculum development, participation on the data science
advisory committee, and collaboration on funding proposals. <br>

The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior
College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the
only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic
Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students
preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. Although
the college is predominantly teaching focused, faculty at Lehman are active
in research, scholarship and creative works. Service to the college,
university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to
student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior
faculty over the first five years for scholarly development and all faculty
are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are
available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and
CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for
scholarship support.<br>

Housed in the School of Natural and Social Sciences, the Lehman College
Department of Sociology is highly research active and includes faculty
engaged in the full range of sociological scholarship. It is one of the
largest departments at Lehman in terms of funded research. Over the past
five years the Sociology Department has averaged 191 graduates per year
making it the largest liberal arts degree at Lehman College (and third
largest of all degrees) and one of the largest departments in the country
in terms of number of sociology majors.<br>

The interdisciplinary data science initiative at Lehman College is a
growing project involving the departments of Mathematics, Computer Science,
Economics, Political Science, Earth, Environmental and Geospatial Sciences,
Biology and Chemistry among others. An interdisciplinary minor in Data
