(NIA) seeks a social scientist to manage and develop a program of innovative
grant-supported research on aging. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black">The NIA supports basic and
translational social and behavioral research and research training on the
processes of aging at both the individual and societal level through grant
supported research. The NIA Division of Behavioral and Social Research</span><span style="color:rgb(31,73,125)"> </span><span style="color:black">(<a href="http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/dbsr" target="_blank">http://www.nia.nih.gov/research/dbsr</a>)
is organized into two branches, individual and population/social
processes, with substantial interactions between them. This
position is located in the population/social branch, which supports research on
the antecedents and impact of changing social, demographic, economic, and
health characteristics of the older population. International comparative
research is often appropriate, and interconnections with individual behavioral
processes are encouraged. The program has sections in demography, epidemiology
and economics of aging as well as health systems research.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black">The position, Health Scientist
Administrator (HSA), evaluates and integrates available knowledge in the
specific program area of responsibility and identifies research which might
produce important new knowledge supporting the NIA mission. Through knowledge
of the latest developments in the field and through continuing consultation
with leaders of research, an HSA develops plans by which NIA-funded research
can be continually productive. To encourage research on identified areas
of high priority by the research community, HSAs develop research announcements
(such as Requests for Applications), as appropriate. The position has the
following responsibilities:</span></p>

</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">Provides
technical administration, scientific and programmatic evaluation of
funded research;</span><span style="color:black"></span></p>
<p class="" style><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">·</span><span style="font-size:7pt;color:black">
</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">Advises institute leadership
of significant research findings and suggests future research directions in
support of the agency research mission;</span><span style="color:black"></span></p>
<p class="" style><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">·</span><span style="font-size:7pt;color:black">
</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">Represents the division at
NIH expert scientific review meetings and other scientific gatherings including
site visits to funded research institutions, expert science workshops, and
scientific conferences; </span><span style="color:black"></span></p>
<p class="" style><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">·</span><span style="font-size:7pt;color:black">
</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">Presents special research
programs and funding requests to the National Advisory Council on Aging – the
expert scientific group that advises NIA on scientific directions;</span><span style="color:black"></span></p>

</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">Prepares Congressional
testimony and responses to Congressional inquiries for the NIA Director on the
research programs for which he/she has responsibility.</span><span style="color:black"></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black">The ideal candidate will possess a
Ph.D. Candidates with strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills
are sought.</span></p>
<p class="" style="margin-bottom:3pt"><span style="color:black">The work
site is the Washington, D.C. suburb of Bethesda, Maryland. Salaries will be
competitive and commensurate with experience; excellent benefits will be

at the GS-12, 13, and 14 federal government salary grades, producing a range of
about $75,621-$138,136 plus benefits for the position which is based in
Bethesda Maryland. Grade is based on experience and other factors.</span></p>
