<b><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:115%">PhD position: Linking People & Places & Redefining Neighbourhoods </span></b><span style="font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%"><u></u><u></u></span></p><p style="margin-bottom:.2in">
<b>One fully funded PhD position </b>(4 years) for the European Research Council (ERC) funded <b>Consolidator Grant research project DEPRIVEDHOODS</b>: Socio-spatial inequality, deprived neighbourhoods, and neighbourhood effects, led by the principal investigator Professor Maarten van Ham. DEPRIVEDHOODS is a methodologically challenging inter-disciplinary and international 5-year research project with 10 researchers in four countries, using unique geo-referenced longitudinal data from Sweden, United Kingdom, Estonia, and The Netherlands. The objective is to come to a better understanding of the relationship between socio-economic inequality, poverty and neighbourhoods, at a time when the spatial concentration of poverty within cities is of great concern to national governments. <u></u><u></u></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:.2in">The candidate must hold at least a Master degree in <b>human geography or another spatially aware social science </b>(demography, sociology, economics). The candidate must have a <b>strong quantitative background </b>with experience using SPSS, STATA, SAS or R for secondary data analysis (including regression analysis). In addition the candidate should be <b>familiar with spatial data analysis and the use of geographic information systems </b>(e.g. ArcGIS). The candidate is willing to go on short trips and has a good command of spoken and written English (Dutch is an advantage but not necessary). A willingness to work in a team, good communication skills, excellent study results, and academic writing skills are regarded as assets. The PhD student will work on a PhD thesis based on co-authored, peer-reviewed publications under the supervision of Prof. van Ham, a post-doc and international collaborators. The student will use GIS to investigate how to better operationalise neighbourhoods, including using alternative neighbourhood geographies, and how to take into account the impact of neighbourhood definition when modelling neighbourhood effects. <u></u><u></u></p>

Monthly salary range €2083- €2664 (salary increases from 1st to 4th year). In addition an attractive end-of-year award and holiday pay award will be paid. <u></u><u></u></p>
