*Job description*

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be involved in the project ‘CITIES OF
MIGRATION: THEORIZING THE ‘DIVERSITY OF MIGRATION-RELATED DIVERSITY’ IN
CITIES.’ The project focuses on how cities respond to different types of
migration-related diversity. Cities of migration face increasingly
‘floating populations’ and a growing complexity of migration-related
diversity, described also as ‘superdiversity.’ However, there is ‘no one
size fits all.’ There will be superdiverse cities, but also multicultural
cities, gateway cities, divided cities, expat cities, and many other types.
Different types of migration-related diversity can also have different
governance implications, both for the governance of diversity in cities
(such as integration) as well as for the development of urban identities.

The project aims to develop a better theoretical and empirical
understanding of different types of migration-related diversity in cities
and the implications for urban governance and for urban identities. It
consists of three parts. First, conceptualizing and mapping different types
of migration-related diversity. Secondly, studying and theorizing
implications for urban governance. Finally, analysing the relationship
between types of diversity and urban identities.

The postdoctoral researcher will implement the project together with Dr.
Peter Scholten. In addition, the postdoctoral research will assist in the
management and implementation of a large European research project that has
recently been acquired and is directly related to the project on Cities of
Migration. Finally, the postdoctoral researcher will assist in teaching for
the master Governance of Migration and Diversity (mastergmd.eur.nl).

The position will be embedded in the Department of Public Administration
and Sociology. Furthermore, the postdoctoral researcher will participate in
the Erasmus Migration and Diversity and Institute and contribute to the
activities of the IMISCOE Research Network, which is currently being
coordinated by DPAS/EMDI.

Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Vital Citizens

The Erasmus University has recently launched three so-called Erasmus
Initiatives, through which academic excellence and multidisciplinary
collaboration in research is stimulated. One of these is the Vital Cities
and Citizens project which aims to (i) to advance our understanding of the
ways in which social and cultural transformations affect urban life - and
(2) by doing so – to help cities thrive as places of inclusion, tolerance
and cohesion, and better articulate the aspirations of their diverse,
resilient and creative citizens. The Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and
Citizens is a collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS,
coordinator), the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication
(ESHCC), and the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS).
