Postdoctoral Research Associate

The newly created Urban Studies Institute seeks a postdoctoral research
associate interested in questions related to housing
(affordability/access), neighborhood change, poverty and/or other aspects
of urban inclusive development starting in Fall 2017.

The urban studies institute conducts top-level urban research from a
variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives; develops an
innovative and specialized interdisciplinary curriculum; and engages with
stakeholders in metropolitan Atlanta. It seeks close collaborative
relations with other academic institutions in the Atlanta region.  The
research agenda ranges from local to global scales, from urban theory to
policy research, and is particularly geared to comparative urban
approaches. Research themes emphasize urban economic resilience and
inclusive development, including questions of urbanization and development,
sustainability, diversity, inequality, life-chances, social/spatial
integration, access to public goods, urban health disparities, etc.

The Institute is directed by Jan Nijman. Recently recruited faculty include
Dan Immergluck, David Iwaniec, and Jean-Paul Addie. The institute is
presently housed in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, ranked among
the Best Graduate Schools for Public Affairs in the United States by the
U.S. News & World Report. Located in downtown Atlanta, its students, alumni
and faculty work to advance economic opportunity, human rights and social
justice around the world.

The scope of responsibilities will include the following:

·         Develop independent and collaborative research on urban studies,
with emphasis on housing affordability/access, neighborhood change, poverty
and/or other aspects of inclusive urban development

·         Comparative studies of Atlanta and other urban areas

·         Teach one course/year on interdisciplinary urban studies

·         Engagement / participation in events sponsored by institute or
affiliates

The preferred candidate has prior research experience on Atlanta and/or
experience with comparative urban research in USA. The PhD must be
completed (including defense) prior to start date.

3.       Personal Statement: up to two-pages (single spaced, 1 inch
margins); include a synopsis of research interests, proposed work, and
career objectives related to urban research

4.       Three letters of recommendations (including one from dissertation
advisor or equivalent)

Competitive salary with full benefits in addition to a mentored research
experience, and support for travel/training; position currently funded
through August 31, 2019.
