UCSF Part time Research Associate Position



The Bush Lab at UCSF’s Center for Health and Community (PI: Dr. Nicole
Bush, PhD) is seeking a Research Associate to work on two longitudinal
studies: the SEED Study and the TIDES Study.



The SEED (Stress, Eating, and Early Development) Study examines the effects
of prenatal stress and maternal weight gain on fetal development and
related prenatal programming of offspring mental and physical health
outcomes across early childhood. The SEED team is currently conducting
home-based and clinic-based assessments with low-income, ethnically diverse
mothers and their 3-4 year old children.



The TIDES (The Infant Development and the Environment) study examines how
maternal stress and everyday chemicals in food, cosmetics, and household
products may affect children’s health and development, beginning in utero.
The TIDES team is conducting clinic-based assessments with mothers and
their 4 year old children.



The Research Associate’s responsibilities will include conducting study
assessments with families and assisting the Principal Investigator and
Study Coordinators as needed. The individual will be responsible for
conducting follow-up assessments with mothers and their offspring at the
research office or in participants’ homes in the community. The individual
will assist with data collection which includes anthropometric measurements
of the young children (using skin calipers, measuring tapes, scales and
measuring boards), developmental assessment using structured activities,
and collecting biological samples from children. Duties will also include
scoring psychological assessments, entering data, and conducting literature
reviews. The Research Associate will also attend research meetings,
participate in study scientific activities, and have opportunities for
involvement in presenting and publishing findings.



Please Note: This is a part time position that requires a minimum
commitment of 10 hours/week. Hours are flexible, although occasionally
evenings and weekends are requested by families. The lab requests a
commitment of at least 6 months (1 year preferred). It is necessary that
applicants have significant experience with preschool-aged children.
Position would start immediately.



Required Qualifications:

Significant work or personal experience with young children between the
ages of 2 to 5 years

Experience/comfort working with racially/ethnically diverse populations

Driver’s license or willingness to travel via public transportation to
participant homes as needed.



Preferred Qualifications:

Experience administering standardized psychological assessments or clinical
assessment

BA/BS in psychology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience

Experience collecting biological measures from children

Fluency in Spanish

Researcher Sought: Bioethics and Cancer Genomics

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Social Science/Bioethics Research

Position Start Date: January 1, 2017 or as negotiated with the successful
applicant.



Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent in bioethics or a social science
discipline with training in ethnography (e.g. anthropology, sociology,
etc.). Experience with empirical bioethics research methodologies, such as
in-depth interviewing or focus groups, is critical. Must have excellent
written and oral communication skills (in English); ability to work in
Spanish strongly desired. Familiarity with cancer research, clinical
trials, and/or basic concepts in molecular genetics/genomics is also
desired. Ability to collaborate (in a complex multi-disciplinary
environment) while working independently is key to success in this
position. Note that applicants with clinical, basic science, or legal
backgrounds will only be considered if they have had extensive additional
training in social science research.



Responsibilities: This is a 100% time position, with initial appointment
for one year. (An 80% time commitment could be considered.) With successful
performance the position is renewable annually. The post-doctoral
researcher will work under the guidance of Barbara Koenig, Ph.D., Director
of UCSF Bioethics, and Galen Joseph, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the UCSF
Department of Anthropology, History and Social Medicine, and the Helen
Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The successful applicant will
participate in a five-year National Cancer Institute-funded study,
conducting ethnographic observation, interviews, and focus groups; managing
data and overseeing compliance with research regulations (such as human
subjects protection); and participating fully in data analysis, report
writing, and research publications. Participation in teaching is optional
but opportunities exist. Compensation will be based on UCSF guidelines and
set by number of years of experience post degree.

We are accepting applications for the Training Program for Scientists
Conducting Research to Reduce HIV/STI Health Disparities (also known as the
Visiting Professor Program) at the University of California, San Francisco.
The deadline to apply is Wednesday, January 18, 2017. The application is

This program is designed to assist investigators interested in conducting
HIV-related research with ethnic minority communities to strengthen the
investigators’ programs of research and obtain NIH funding. Scientists in
the program have access to the expertise of a team of mentors who are
successful at conducting NIH-funded research in minority communities.
Program participants will:

•          Spend 6 weeks in San Francisco for 3 consecutive summers.

•          Receive a monthly stipend for living expenses and round-trip
airfare to San Francisco.

•          Receive $20,000 to conduct a pilot study that will serve as
preliminary data for a larger NIH application.

•          Get mentoring from our experienced investigators.



Since 1997, the program has provided training, mentoring, and technical
assistance to 66 Visiting Professors from universities in the continental
US and Puerto Rico. To date, program participants have received over $144
million in grant funding, including 57 multi-year awards from NIH, 31 R01
awards, and 14 awards from CDC, HRSA, or SAMHSA. Program participants have
also made a scientific impact, generating over 1,100 articles.
