*Reports to:* Vice President, Immigration

*Department:* Immigration Policy

*Staff reporting to this position:* None

*Position classification:* Exempt, full-time
 Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Policy Analyst for the
Immigration Policy team. The successful candidate will have a proven track
record of strong research and written work, and will be familiar with the
current policy debates on immigration. The position will help shape
American Progress’ work on issues such as the economics of immigration,
enforcement and border security, refugee issues, and shifting demographic
trends in the United States. This position will assist in the
conceptualization and execution of a range of publications using
quantitative and qualitative research methods to expand the Immigration
team’s body of written work.

*Responsibilities:*

§ Support and conduct original research and analysis on academic, policy,
and legislative issues. This will include conducting literature reviews;
drafting talking points, columns, papers, charts, and tables; and
proofreading, fact-checking, and editing documents.

§ Produce at least three written pieces per quarter and assist the team
with the production of reports, issue briefs, columns, infographics, and
other published work.

§ Work with outside authors to produce cutting edge studies for American
Progress; manage the internal review and editing process; and guide the

*Requirements and qualifications:*

§ *Exceptional writing skills: *Above all else, this position requires an
ability to write quickly and concisely and convey a range of facts and
information to various audiences. The ideal candidate will have built a
body of work that includes a range of pieces—from quick 500-word columns to
10,000-word reports—on short deadlines and with minimal editing required
before publication. The successful candidate will also have experience
breaking down dense jargon—for example, theoretical economic concepts,
dense legislative language, or demographic data—for use by a lay audience
and policymakers.

§ *Experience initiating and managing multiple projects*: The successful
candidate will be a self-starter who has the ability to start new projects,
take ownership of all aspects of the work, and see them through to
completion. The candidate will have experience working on multiple projects
at once, with varying deadlines, and be comfortable with shifting their
priorities as the issue area evolves.

§ *Attention to detail: *The successful candidate will be meticulous in
their work, producing products that are thoroughly sourced and without
factual errors.

§ *Economics training, data experience, and/or Spanish language is a
plus: *Candidates should feel comfortable, and have experience, analyzing
U.S. Census data. A working knowledge of labor economics is a plus. And
while not required, preference will be given to candidates with experience
working with Stata, SPSS, R, or other statistical analysis software.
Likewise, Spanish-language skills are a plus.

§ *Education and experience requirements:*Three to five years of
experience is required; master’s degree is preferred. For this position, a
degree in economics, statistics, or another quantitatively focused field is
a plus but not required.
