Research Analyst in Public Opinion Research Harvard T.H. Chan School of
Public Health Health Policy and Management

Duties & Responsibilities

The Harvard Opinion Research Program (HORP), established in 1987 and headed
by Senior Associate Dean Robert Blendon, focuses on measuring and
understanding public opinion in the United States and in other countries
using survey research methods. Core research activities include designing
and conducting original opinion surveys, as well as reviewing and analyzing
survey data collected by other organizations over the past 60 years. HORP’s
polling efforts have been featured as lead stories in national media
outlets such as National Public Radio, The Washington Post, and The Boston
Globe. Approximately a dozen surveys are conducted each year leading to
reports, published papers, meeting presentations, and briefings. To date,
HORP has conducted over 500 surveys in more than 20 countries and has
amassed over 200 publications in the academic literature.

The Research Analyst in Public Opinion Research within HORP plays a leading
role in the design and analysis of surveys as well as the writing of
sophisticated reports, particularly those for media organizations, with an
extremely high level of independence. These tasks involve a considerable
amount of in-depth background research and a high level of discretion in
analyzing and interpreting survey results.

as peer-reviewed publications from relevant sources, a vital task in
informing instrument design for current projects. To be successful in this
task, the ideal candidate would possess a substantial knowledge of advanced
research design and analytical approaches to survey data.

2. Play a leading role in the design and multi-layered review of complex
survey instruments that meet established methodologies for polling research.

3. Write sophisticated reports conveying the results of these opinion
surveys using a variety of word processing, statistical and graphical
programs. Reports, which are usually between 15-20 pages in length,
contain multiple tables/charts, statistical analyses and interpretation of
results. They are aimed at editors of major media organizations and their
reporters, and thus require concise and direct methods of analysis and
presentation. In addition, these reports are widely circulated to the
general public and the professional community.

4. Translate research findings to journalists, foundation executives and
government decision-makers to ensure accurate interpretation of survey
results. Additionally, is expected to edit for accuracy and clarity
