AARP Research is seeking a paid, full-time Summer Intern. The time
commitment is 40 hours per week at our downtown DC office (June 8 - August
14) conveniently located near the Gallery Place metro

i. Position responsibilities

The intern will support Research Center staff in a variety of research
tasks, including writing reports, background research, quantitative
analysis, proofreading and fact and number checking. The position allows
an intern to get a hands-on experience with an active research team and
gives needed support to the Research Center.

The intern will proofread, fact and number check research reports,
annotations, and other research documents for research staff. This is
critical to the department as a quality control.

The intern will write background sections for reports and complete reports
as needed. This is a learning opportunity for the intern and also frees up
research advisors for consulting work.

The intern will work on research synthesis projects, and conduct SPSS
analyses coordinating with key players in the Research Center and around
the Association to put together documents that are useful, user-friendly
and leverage the knowledge of the RC.

II. Position complexity, interaction & impact

The intern will have an intern coordinator who will be responsible for
providing guidance and workflow management. He or she will also have
access to a mentor and to the Research Director.

Work such as number checking, data analysis and writing reports will be
more highly supervised, while work on projects, such as syntheses, will
require more independent judgment. Namely, the abilities to sort through
research, determine what is pertinent to the research question and decide
how the information should be organized will be necessary for work
requiring more independent judgment.

The position will directly impact the ability of RC to support AARP’s
social mission. The intern allows the RC to accomplish goals that we would
not be able to accomplish without the intern – specifically the synthesis
projects, report assistance, and analyses of data. These tasks are
critical to our ability to leverage knowledge, but would not be done or
would be completed more slowly without an intern dedicated to them. Likewise,
many projects would be delayed without the assistance of an intern to write
reports or sections of reports, participate in quality control, and prepare
graphs and presentations.

iii. Desired Education, Work Experience and competencies

The ideal intern is working towards a Master’s degree or Ph.D. Knowledge
of computer programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is critical. A
basic understanding of statistics and proficiency in SPSS, or similar
statistical software, is required. Strong communications skills (verbal and
written) are required.

To Apply for this Opportunity

Submit a current resume indicating preferred work location (We’re in all
50 states and U.S. territories)

A writing sample (Please attach to this application) A cover letter
detailing the areas of Interest to you at AARP.

Two letters of recommendation from a college or university
professor/instructor and a manager who is familiar with your work An
