Postdoctoral researcher posts, London and Birmingham: anticipating the
future energy demands of post retirement travel.

Fixed term 15 months; salary in the range of ca. £28,000-32,700 p.a.

Closing date June 11th; starting date September 1st or ASAP after (both
posts)

We are inviting applications for two 15 month, full time research posts
attached to a new RCUK funded project which forms part of the DEMAND Centre
(Dynamics of Energy, Mobility and Demand: see www.demand.ac.uk). One
researcher will be based at University College London (Geography) with Dr
Russell Hitchings, and one at the University of Birmingham (Geography Earth
and Environmental Sciences) with Dr Rosie Day; however the team will work
collaboratively. Both researchers will be engaged in qualitative, interview
based research with retired and soon to be retired individuals to explore
their actual and aspirational leisure travel practices in retirement and
older age. We are looking for confident, skilled researchers with a PhD or
equivalent in a relevant social science area (e.g. social gerontology,
mobility, energy geography..) who can work across disciplines. Experience
in in-depth interviewing and analysis is essential, as are strong writing
skills. We expect the researchers to take an active role in the project
from development to the authoring of outputs; non-academic engagement and
‘impact’ activities will also be an important aspect of the work. There
will be opportunities for conference work and to join the activities of the
wider DEMAND Centre. We aim for these posts to be excellent career
development opportunities for the right candidates.

DEMAND is a 5 year, multi-partner major research centre funded by the ESRC
and EPSRC with support from EDF, Transport for London and the International
Energy Agency. It is led by Professor Elizabeth Shove, with Professors
Gordon Walker and Greg Marsden.

Informal enquiries about these posts may be made to Dr Russell Hitchings
(UCL post) 020 7679 0508, r.hitchings at ucl.ac.uk or Dr Rosie Day
(Birmingham post) 0121 414 8096, r.j.day at bham.ac.uk
