The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is a research
institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and
located in the centre of The Hague. The staff of the institute consists of
about 50 persons, mostly researchers.

Post doc

Migration and migrants’ lives: an origin-destination perspective

Full time (38 hours/week)



General Program Description:

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to take a key role in the larger
Starting Grant project of Helga de Valk funded by the European Research
Council (ERC) entitled “Families of migrant origin: a life course perspective”
(FaMiLife). This project aims to advance understanding of the factors that
shape the individual life course of migrants and their descendants, its
consequences for family relations in migrant families and its link between
demographic change in the country of settlement and origin. The project aims
to make innovative theoretical and methodological steps in understanding the
interlinkage between migration and the life course. The postdoc will join the
FaMiLife research team at NIDI and is expected to participate in its research
activities.



Function descriptions:

-          Carry out academic research and publish international peer reviewed
citation indexed journal articles within the described ERC project

-          Independently participate and present at international (migration)
meetings to report research findings

-          Take part in daily supervision of PhD candidates



Requirements:

-          A completed PhD in sociology, demography or associated disciplines

-          A strong background in quantitative data analysis and advanced
statistical methods

-          Strong analytical capacity

-          Fluency in English and good writing skills, reflected in published
articles in peer reviewed international citation indexed journals in the field

-          Proven affinity and expertise in the domain of migration studies,
preferably from an origin and destination perspective

-          Ability to work independently and take initiatives for theoretical
and conceptual innovative thinking and research

-          Being able and willing to participate in PhD supervision



Appointment and salary

The position is temporary for a period of 2 years, preferably starting May 1th
2014. The selection procedure will include a psychological assessment.

Depending on previous training and work experience, the maximum gross monthly
salary coming with a full time appointment will amount to € 4,462 (scale 11,
Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities - CAO NU), excluding 8% holiday
allowance and 8,3% year-end bonus. We offer an extensive package of fringe
benefits.
