Research Officer in Demography / Population Health

London School of Economics and Political Science - Department of Social Policy

Starting salary from £32,794 to £39,669 per annum inclusive

Start date: Summer/Fall 2014

Duration: Up to 4 years

Applications must be received by 2 March 2014

We invite applications to work on a project on the determinants and consequences of fertility
timing. This is part of the project “Costs and Gains to Postponement: How Changes in the Age
of Parenthood Influence the Health and Well-being of Children, the Parents, and Populations”
(COSTPOST) which is funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant to Mikko Myrskylä.

Working with Professor Myrskylä you will investigate the factors and mechanisms that influence
the timing of births, and the consequences of early and late fertility on the health and
well-being of both the children and the parents. The specific research questions analysed in
this project are not tied to any geographical region, and both contemporary and historical
data sets will be used. You will also have the opportunity to develop an independent research
agenda.

You will have completed or nearly completed a PhD in population studies, demography, or
related social science discipline. Your past work will include analysis of health or fertility
behaviour, or both. Through your research you will have demonstrated experience of advanced
statistical techniques and analysis of large data sets. You will have demonstrated potential
to publish, or have already published your work in leading journals.

In addition to a competitive salary the benefits that come with this job include a defined
benefits pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development
opportunities.
