CSR Director Position Announcement

The Center for Social Research (CSR) at North Dakota State University
(NDSU) is searching for a
Director. This is a joint appointment, 55% as CSR Director and 45% as
an academic appointment in the
Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The Director will be the
second Director in the history of
the CSR and will play a key role in defining its future. The CSR
currently includes three full-time staff
researchers as well as several graduate student researchers. The CSR
has served as a key hub for
sociodemographic research in North Dakota and the northern Great
Plains on topics ranging from early
childhood and aging to housing and public health. It has also made
notable research contributions at local,
state, and regional levels based on its strengths in survey research,
needs assessments, program
evaluations, and social indicator projects like North Dakota KIDS
COUNT and North Dakota Compass.

CSR Director Roles (55%):

The Director will play a key role in achieving the CSR’s objectives of
sustaining effective growth and
continuing to be a state and regional presence in applied social
research. S/he will be a leader who can
supervise and implement research, particularly by drawing on various
social science research
methodologies. The successful candidate will support ongoing research
activities and pursue
collaborations with university faculty members. S/he will also develop
grant and project/program
proposals for institutions and organizations in the public, private,
and not-for-profit sectors in order to
grow the CSR’s capacity and research volume, both on and off campus.
S/he will be able to provide
leadership, including facilitating integration of different
perspectives in solving complex problems and
encouraging opportunities for mentoring and professional development
of staff and students, while
maintaining an environment that promotes work/life balance. The CSR
Director will report to the
Director of the Institute for Regional Studies, who also serves as the
Dean of the College of Arts,
Humanities, and Social Sciences, and will also receive support from an
Advisory Committee. The
Director will perform other duties as assigned.

Department of Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Roles (45%):

The candidate will hold a joint position in the Department of
Sociology and Anthropology in which
research, teaching and service will be expected. The successful
candidate will be required to teach two
courses each year in sociology that will contribute to undergraduate
and graduate (master’s) programs.
These courses include social research methods/lab, quantitative
research methods, and/or other areas of
interest. The candidate must be tenurable in the Department of
Sociology and Anthropology pending
departmental approval.

Required Education and Experience

•    A Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field.

•    Demonstrated administrative experience (e.g., visioning,
strategic planning, project management,
budgeting, developing internal/external partnerships) in an applied
social research environment.

•    A record of research, teaching, and service that warrants tenure
and a rank of associate or full
professor at NDSU.

Required Demonstrated Skills and Abilities

•    Strong leadership skills (e.g., experience in staff/student
supervision and development, mentoring,
capacity to contribute to and encourage synergy amongst a team
dedicated to producing high
quality research and reports).

•    Expertise in applied social science research, including
quantitative research, and expertise to teach
social research methods.

•    Success in securing grant or contract funding from federal,
state, or local government or private
agencies.

•    Commitment to effectively disseminating knowledge that will
strengthen the university,
community, and state.

•    Effective oral and written communication skills.

sustainability of the CSR.
