YOUNG SCIENTISTS SUMMER PROGRAM 2014

The Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), offers
advanced graduate students from around the world the opportunity to spend a summer working with distinguished
scientists on projects related to their own doctoral research in the natural and social sciences.

Applications are now open for the 2014 program.

                                                  [schloss5cfbca.jpg]

The YSSP is a three-month program held in a beautiful Palace in Laxenburg, near Vienna, Austria from June through
August. It is designed to help participants forge lasting professional contacts as well as gain entry to IIASA’s
influential global network of scientific researchers.

During the summer months, young scientists research and produce a paper with a policy-related theme that will be
considered for publication. They are also encouraged to attend seminars and workshops to broaden their perspectives
and strengthen their analytical and presentation skills.

The program is open to advanced PhD students from all over the world.

Funding is available for successful applicants who are citizens or residents of countries where IIASA has a National
Member Organization (NMO). In addition, a limited number of applicants from non-NMO countries are accepted each year,
with funding provided in exceptional cases. Applicants’ academic interests should coincide with current IIASA research
and methodologies.

“I benefited a lot from the YSSP and was always amazed of the richness of knowledge and expertise and no wonder that
IIASA, in particular the Forestry Program, is one of the world class research centres. I came back to Edinburgh with
new tools and expertise that will help me to work on PhD research with ease.”

Stephy Makungwa
YSSP 2010

“I will never forget this summer for many reasons. I have definitely matured as a scientist through the interaction
with my supervisors and the rest of the YSSPers, and also with other IIASA staff. The feedback received about my
research, as well as the numbers of scientific activities throughout the summer have helped me enormously.”

“The program provides a very unique working atmosphere to learn the latest skills and techniques for answering
research complex questions/issues of global concern. I would certainly encourage my colleagues and friends to apply
for the YSSP and join a new genre of young scientists with global vision.”
