9. Emory University - Dual Degree program in Sociology and Public Health

Emory University announces a new dual degree program in sociology and public
health. Beginning this year, students who are admitted to the PhD program
in the Department of Sociology will be able to complete an MPH in any of
five departments in Emory's Rollins School of Public Health: Behavioral
Sciences and Health Education, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Health
Policy and Management, or Global Health. Requirements for the MPH can be
completed in two sequential semesters. Tuition for the MPH is not covered
by PhD fellowships offered by the Laney Graduate School, but the compressed
time to completion offers a significant benefit compared with applying to
the MPH program separately. The PhD/MPH program provides training and
credentials that may facilitate careers in basic and applied health-related
research in academic or non-academic settings. The Department of Sociology
offers area concentrations in health, social inequality, social psychology,
and culture, and students are encouraged to cross these areas in their
research. In addition to department faculty whose research is focused on
health, a number of social scientists in the School of Public Health and the
School of Medicine are formally affiliated with the department. For more
information on the dual degree program, see the websites of:
