Call for applications Postdoctoral Fellowship

The French National Institute for Demographic Studies (Institut National
d'Etudes Demographiques, INED) recruits a: Postdoctoral Fellow

to work on the EU-funded (FP7)Families and Societies Project.

The fellowship is designed to attract qualified, promising scientists
entering their professional career in the field of population studies. The
postdoctoral researcher will work in collaboration with the project’s lead
researchers and will benefit from the research and training environment
provided by INED and the European network in order to further improve
his/her research achievements.

Area of research

The recruited person is expected to work mainly on young adults and the
transition from their parental home to adulthood and self-sufficiency in
Europe. One objective will be to identify the various patterns of transition
to adulthood in Europe and to assess and map policies supporting young
adults. The effect of the ongoing economic recession on youths’
trajectories and policies will also be considered.

Profile

Candidates with various backgrounds in demography, economics, quantitative
sociology, or statistics and econometrics are encouraged to apply. A strong
experience in quantitative analysis of households and/or international
surveys (including, for instance in Europe, EU-SILC, Gender and Generations
Surveys, the Labour Force Surveys, European Social Surveys, etc.), and
familiarity with comparative analysis are two advantages. Good drafting
skills in English are also required.

The application package should be sent to olivier.thevenon at ined.fr before
the 05th of july 2013, and contain:

(1) a curriculum vitae

(2) a letter in support of the application

(3) a short description of current research (one page)

(4) 2 research papers or thesis chapters

(5) 2 letters of recommendation established scientists familiar with the
applicant's work

Conditions of admission

** Applicants must hold a PhD degree delivered since 01/10/2007 in a
discipline connected with population science (demography, economics,
epidemiology, history, sociology etc.), or be registered for a thesis which
they are scheduled to submit before end 2012. NB: selected applicants who
have not submitted their thesis by 31/02/2013 will lose the benefit of the
postdoctoral fellowship.

** The applicant must do their postdoctoral research in a laboratory
(or team) other than the one in which they did their thesis work.

** There are no age or nationality criteria. However, applicants over
the age of 35 must provide evidence of their atypical career (professional
experience other than postdoctoral research).

A short list of applicants will be interviewed by Skype

Brief description of the “Families and Societies† project:

Twenty eight European Research Institutes collaborate in this project, of
which the main objectives are to investigate the diversity of family forms,
relationships, and life courses in Europe; to assess the compatibility of
existing policies with these changes; and to contribute to evidence-based
policies. - The project will extend our knowledge on how policies promote
well-being, inclusion and sustainable societal development among families.
Our approach relies on three key premises. First, family life courses are
becoming more diverse and complex. Second, individual lives are
interdependent, linked within and across generations. Third, social contexts
and policies shape individual and family life courses. Building upon these
premises we a) explore the growing complexity of family configurations and
transitions, b) examine their implications for men, women and children with
respect to inequalities in life chances, intergenerational relations and
care arrangements, c) investigate how policies address family diversity, d)
develop short- and longer-term projections, and e) identify future policy
needs.

Brief description of INED:

The French National Institute for Demographic Studies (Institut National
d'Etudes Démographiques, INED www.ined.fr/en) studies the populations of
the world and of regions or countries –in particular Europe and France-
using the tools of demography in association with those of other disciplines
such as history, geography, sociology, anthropology, economics, biology and
epidemiology. The scientific activities of INED are organized into twelve
thematic research units. The post-doctoral fellow will work in two research
units, one on families, fertility, sexuality and the other on Economic
Demography research (http://demographie_economique.site.ined.fr/).

Conditions of contract

Postdoctoral researchers are hired under a fixed-term contract of one year,
renewable once. The contract is expected to start in May 2013, but it can be
adjusted to personal constraints.

The gross monthly salary is €2336 (€1901 net). The salaries of
postdoctoral researchers with at least three years' experience in research
since their PhD may be raised, to a gross salary of up to €2584 (€2103
net).

Additional financial aid will be provided to cover potential travel and
moving expenses.

One day per week will be devoted by the fellow to his/her own research,
related to the project or not: submission and revision of previous work, new
research, specific collaborative projects, applications for grants,
fellowships or permanent positions, etc.

At their request and depending on the host structure, the researchers may
receive special financial support for missions connected with their research
or their participation in science events.
