Analyst IV Position

The UCSF Global Health Group is an “Action Tank,” dedicated to translating
major new paradigms and approaches to global health challenges into
large-scale action, to positively impact the lives of millions of people.
The Global Health Group works across the spectrum from analysis, through
policy formulation and consensus building, to large-scale implementation of
programs in collaborating developing countries. Organizationally, the Global
Health Group is a component of UCSF Global Health Sciences.

The goal of the Global Health Group’s Private Sector Healthcare Initiative
(PSHi) is to study and disseminate innovative solutions for strengthening
health systems in developing countries through the engagement of the private
sector. Through the PSHi, the Global Health Group provides practical and
scientific advice, technical and program support, consensus building and
lesson-sharing to countries and non-state organizations. The Global Health
Group works closely with a wide range of public and private partners, both
in-country and internationally, to accomplish its work.


Evaluation Project Officer for Quantitative and Qualitative Research in
Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya:

The PSHi seeks to hire a dynamic and talented Project Director with a strong
background in quantitative and qualitative methods to contribute expert
research, analytical, study design and implementation leadership support to
two multi-year qualitative and process evaluations of the delivery of
private sector care to 1) improve family health practices among informal
health care providers (PPMVs) in Nigeria, and 2) evaluate program design and
health market effects of interventions among private health care
practitioners in Kenya and Ghana. The Evaluation Project Director will
assist in disseminating findings and informing global policy through
publications and presentations.

Note: This is a 20-month full-time contract position effective February 1,
2013. Significant travel to study countries of 2-4 weeks’ duration will be
required.

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS with a major in public health, epidemiology, economics, or a related
field and four years of experience in administrative analysis or operations
research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; a
minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an academic or NGO setting on
public health.
• Experience working with a range of government, NGO and academic partners
in developing countries.
• Experience conducting field research and data collection in developing
countries, and preparing results for academic publication.
• Experience translating research findings into policy-relevant
recommendations.
• Experience writing and publishing in a variety of media, including
peer-reviewed publications, reports, case studies, grant proposals,
presentations and web content.
• Experience living or working in developing countries in Asia or Africa.
• Ability to travel to developing countries in Africa for 2-12 weeks at a
time (up to 40% total).
• Excellent project management and organizational skills; demonstrated
ability to set and keep timelines, and coordinate large numbers of people or
projects across different locations.
• Excellent qualitative and quantitative research and academic writing
skills. Ability to analyze.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Demonstrated ability to
develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with people
and institutions; experience communicating effectively with personnel from
diverse cultures/nationalities as well as across complex organizations.
• Strong self-management skills and considerable attention to detail;
ability to work independently, with little supervision, under fast-paced,
flexible and ambiguous conditions, and exercise sound timely judgment and
take relevant responsible action as required. Able to handle multiple tasks
simultaneously.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office or equivalent software.
• Proficiency with STATA or other quantitative software.
• Proficiency with Atlas.ti, Dedoose or other qualitative software.
