Subject: [PERN] Faculty position in water and environmental justice at Michigan
     State u

Please forward as appropriate.++++

The Department of Sociology and the Environmental Science and Public Policy Program (ESPP) at
Michigan State University seeks candidates for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor
position beginning August 16, 2014 in the area of environmental justice/environmental equality.
We seek candidates with a specific research focus on water access issues of concern to groups
that traditionally have been marginalized in society, including, but not limited to, indigenous
peoples, women, and communities of color. The individual in this position will have a 75%
appointment in the Sociology Department and a 25% appointment in ESPP, and will be expected to
develop a well-defined research agenda, with a focus in the United States or overseas or both. In
addition, the successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustained program of external
grant support for their research program. Candidates must display evidence of excellence in
research and must be committed to undergraduate and graduate education.

The position is part of MSU's Global Water Initiative (water.msu.edu), an effort to mobilize
research expertise across the campus to address the world's most compelling water issues. With
over 100 faculty members already working in water-related disciplines, the university has
expertise spanning academic units within the natural, social, and engineering sciences. Over the
next few years, the MSU Global Water Initiative will coordinate recruitment of 16 new faculty
researchers across the disciplinary spectrum. New hires will collaborate with current faculty to
enhance disciplinary expertise, strengthen linkages across disciplines, and create new advances
in water science, technology, and policy.

A Ph.D. in Sociology or related field is required.  The ideal applicant should have a solid
understanding of the intersection between environmental justice and environmental equity issues
including but not limited to governance, political economy and political ecology, law or policy,
development, social movements, stratification, culture, race, ethnicity, gender, and health
disparities. Experience with spatial analysis is welcome. The ideal candidate will have
experience and a willingness to work collaboratively with faculty in other disciplines, such as
the physical and ecological sciences, agriculture and natural resources, biology, engineering,
law, and medical and health professions.

All applications should include a curriculum vitae, a statement of interest, examples of
published research, and three letters of reference. Questions may be addressed to Professor Tom
Dietz, Search Committee Chair, at soc1 at msu.edu. Review of applications will begin on October 1,
2013 and will continue until the position is filled.

MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity employer. MSU is committed to achieving
excellence through a diverse workforce and inclusive culture that encourages all people to reach
their full potential. The University actively encourages applications and/or nominations of
women, persons of color, veterans and persons with disabilities.
