The Division of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of
Southampton invites applications for TWO Postdoctoral Research
Assistant/Fellow posts to work in a research group collaborating with the
Africa Centre for Health & Population Studies and others on projects focused
on family demography and health in South Africa.



This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant group of North-South
social science and public health specialists. The research group is part of
the ESRC Centre for Population Change (www.cpc.ac.uk). Please indicate which

We are seeking a creative and independent Research Assistant/Fellow to join
a Wellcome Trust-funded partnership between the Africa Centre for Health and
Population Studies and the University of Southampton to enhance research and
training in population health. The postdoctoral researcher will join
colleagues in the School of Social Science and the Faculty of Medicine with
long-standing and internationally recognised records of research in South
Africa. She/he will have a key role in conducting and developing new
demographic research projects and training. Scientific projects will
primarily use longitudinal demographic and health surveillance data
collected by the Africa Centre [www.africacentre.ac.za]. Topics of
particular interest for secondary data analyses are family-based studies of
health; health and wellbeing consequences of child and adult migration; and,
intergenerational research. Additionally, the researcher will be involved
with demographic training of students in the partner institutions. The
position is based at the Africa Centre but will involve travel to
Southampton and elsewhere for project meetings, training and conferences.
Applicants should have a PhD (or be close to completion) or equivalent
experience in Demography, Social Statistics or related quantitative social
science. This post is tenable from the 1st May or as soon as possible
thereafter.

Our multidisciplinary team is seeking a social scientist will strong
quantitative skills as well as, an interest in conducting primary data
collection, to join us in working on an Economic and Social Research
Council-funded project to improve the measurement of family indicators
associated with child health and well-being in population-based studies in
sub-Saharan Africa. The project focuses on methods of longitudinal analyses
and collecting information from and about non-resident parents, non-parental
caregiving and children who migrate. The collaborative project involves two
UK academic institutions: the University of Southampton and the London
School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the Wellcome Trust-funded Africa
Centre for Health & Population Studies in South Africa. The postdoctoral
research will conduct analyses of existing longitudinal data collected in
the Africa Centre Demographic Information System (www.africacentre.ac.za);
be responsible for developing and managing a new family health survey; and,
analyses of survey data using structural equation modelling methods. The
position is based in the University of Southampton
(www.southampton.ac.uk/socsci) but will require the postholder to spend up
to 50% of time working at the Africa Centre and travelling to attend
meetings and conferences. Applicants should have a PhD (or be close to
completion) or equivalent experience in Demography, Social Statistics or
related quantitative social science. Interest in family studies and the
interrelated areas of health and/or psychology will be helpful. This post is
tenable from the 1st May or as soon as possible thereafter.
