The Director will assume the academic and strategic leadership of the Centre and
will be the Principal Investigator of the ESS prior to the establishment of the ESS
ERIC. Once established, the Director will become the founding Director of the ESS
ERIC, responsible to its General Assembly. This requires advanced, detailed and
practical experience of survey methods and implementation in a cross-national
environment and an established track record of leadership. He or she will provide

ESS and work ‘hands on’ with his or her team on the practical implementation of the
survey life cycle.

The Director will have and expect to develop an academic track record of
publications, including papers on cross-national survey methods, likely to be
assessed as world-leading or internationally-excellent in the forthcoming Research
Excellence Framework. He or she will be expected to promote the widest possible use
of ESS data and methodology.

In addition to line management responsibilities for staff within the Centre the
Director will be required to lead and/or coordinate ESS teams and committees. These
currently include staff from the six other institutions that form the ESS Core
Scientific Team (CST), the sampling expert group, the Questionnaire Design Teams,
the 21-nation ESS ERIC steering committee, the 34-nation ESS National Coordinators
Forum as well as the ESS Scientific Advisory Board and Methods Group.

The Director will be expected to oversee any unresolved stages of the ESS ERIC
application and co-ordinate the detailed operational planning required prior to the
formal start of ESS ERIC operations (anticipated to be from June 2013).

He or she will be expected to oversee the ESS infrastructure’s outreach and training
functions in collaboration with CST partners and represent the Centre within the
University and the ESS more generally at various international conferences and
events.
