‘MIGRATING OUT OF POVERTY’ RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
ASIA RESEARCH INSTITUTE, NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE

INVITATION TO APPLY

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable Research Fellow to work on the
Migrating out of Poverty Research Programme Consortium (RPC), funded by
the UK’s Department for International Development and coordinated by the
University of Sussex. The position will be for 2 years.

You will be based at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National
University of Singapore(NUS), Singapore, and will have the chance to work
with an international team of migration scholars on various existing
migration cluster projects in the institute (see

AREA OF EXPERTISE

The successful candidate will be someone who holds a PhD degree (or is
awaiting conferment) and has research interests and expertise in
Migration Studies, Poverty Reduction, Policy and/or Development Studies
in the Southeast Asian region.

The candidate should preferably have research experience in the area of
migration and poverty in Southeast Asia, as well as expertise in managing
multi-country research (both questionnaire surveys and in-depth
interviews). Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative data
analysis is highly desirable. The candidate must be familiar with
questionnaire design, sampling methodology in the context of Asia, and
must be fluent in both spoken and written Bahasa Indonesian or Javanese.

The successful candidate should also possess the following
skills/qualities:

  *  Good project management, team-building skills and aptitude for
     working in a Southeast Asian context;
  *  Ability to manage large research projects and prepared to spend
     several months in the field (Indonesia);
  *  A willingness to play a coordinating role in liaising with all the
     partners in the RPC;
  *  Research experience in Asia;
  *  Experience in handling large datasets and conducting qualitative
     interviews;
  *  Strong library skills;
  *  Excellent command of spoken and written English and the ability to
     write for a variety of audiences;
  *  Good networks with regional institutes and NGOs involved in
     migration-related work are an added advantage.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The terms and conditions for the position are as follows:

  *  To assume duty as soon as possible but no later than mid-April 2012.
  *  PhD candidates who have fulfilled all the requirements of the PhD and
     awaiting conferment may also apply. A letter from your university
     will be required to confirm that you have successfully completed all
     degree requirements for the conferment of a PhD degree before your
     proposed start date.
  *  Contracts for a 24-month period to be awarded on a competitive basis
     to deserving candidates.
  *  An all-inclusive and fixed monthly salary of up to S$5,500.
  *  A monthly housing allowance of S$500 for non-Singaporean staff who do
     not own properties in Singapore.
  *  CPF contributions in accordance with the Central Provident Fund Act
     will be made for Singapore citizens and permanent residents.
  *  A travel subsidy (payable once only) of S$2,000 will be provided for
     expatriates who are recruited from overseas*.
  *  Medical benefits entitlement.
  *  Vacation leave of 28 days per calendar year.

Terms and conditions, according to university guidelines, are subject to
change without prior notice.

*The travel subsidy is a contribution towards expenses incurred by the
appointee in re-locating to Singapore. Such expenses refer to costs for
travel, packing, transportation and insurance of personal and
professional effects as well as settling-in expenses. No other allowances
will be payable.
