>
> DBASSE is one of five divisions of the National Research Council, which is the research arm of the National Academy of Sciences. The Division on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE) focuses the knowledge, analytical tools, and methods of the behavioral and social sciences on some of the nation's most pressing issues in efforts to understand them and to contribute to their solution. Our areas of expertise include (but are not limited to) anthropology, child development, demography, economics, education, history, law, gerontology, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics.

> The Committee on Population was established by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in 1983 to bring the knowledge and methods of the population sciences to bear on major issues of science and public policy. The goal of the Committee on Population is to respond to requests for scientific advice from federal agencies and private foundations that that range broadly across demography and population studies, both nationally and internationally. CPOP originates and leads expert meetings, research workshops, panel consensus studies, and a variety of outreach activities. Most of these activities are collaborations among DBASSE staff and expert volunteers from the U.S. and other nations. Recent activities include studies of the use of biomarkers in social surveys, rapid population aging in Asia, macro-economic effects of population aging, and health and mortality differentials among developed nations.
>
> The Director of the Committee on Population will need to have a keen interest in and broad knowledge of domestic and international population issues and substantial experience working at the intersection of research, policy, and practice. A doctorate in demography, sociology, or a related social science and at least ten years of related professional experience are required, as are demonstrated superior talents, skills, and abilities in networking and relationship building, project development, fundraising, communications, and project management and leadership. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
>
> As part of the senior management team within the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, the Director of the Committee on Population is responsible for designing and executing a program of work aimed at strengthening science-based population policy both domestically and internationally. As such, the Director works closely with (volunteer) members of the Committee on Population to establish a vision and working strategy and then manages all aspects of the work including: supervising all aspects of program development and project management, providing leadership and guidance to other members of staff while cultivating a work environment that fosters teamwork, developing budget estimates and maintaining operations within budgetary constraints, working with private foundations and various government agencies to develop fiscal support for program and project activities, recruiting and supporting expert volunteers to serve on the Academy’s various consensus panels and other activities, and ensuring that all reports and activities undertaken by the Committee on Population achieve the highest level of scholarship. A large fraction of the work involves the design and execution of interdisciplinary advisory committees designed to generate reports that bring the knowledge and methods of the population sciences to bear on major issues of science and public policy.
