Position Announcement
Research Associate
 
A Research Associate is being sought by Population Action International (PAI), a not for profit organization that advocates for women and families to have access to contraception in order to improve their health, reduce poverty and protect their environment. Our research and advocacy strengthen U.S. and international assistance for family planning. We work with local and national leaders in developing countries to improve their reproductive health care programs and policies. PAI shows how these programs are critical to global concerns, such as preventing HIV, combating the effects of environmental degradation and climate change, and strengthening national security.
 
The Associate will conceptualize and conduct pioneering research, analysis and writing on topics related to international population and development including reproductive health, fertility, demography, economic growth, HIV/AIDS, and population policies.  The Research Associate will also provide technical expertise and strategic thinking on existing and new areas of PAI?s work, including population and climate change; population, health and environment linkages; security; reproductive health/HIV integration; and financing reproductive health. We are looking for a dynamic, ideas oriented individual who can provide strategic recommendations for the development of new areas of policy relevant research.
 
Requirements include:
 	* Excellent research skills, specifically a familiarity with sources of demographic and development data
 	* An ability to gather, analyze and organize quantitative and qualitative data and information
 	* Excellent writing skills and an ability to communicate complex technical issues to a policy and advocacy oriented audience, both written and orally
 	* Good knowledge and understanding of a wide range of international development, population, reproductive health and family planning programs and policies
 	* Proficiency in the use of relevant databases and software to analyze population, development, and economic data. 
 
Valuable personal qualities include:
 	* An ability to work closely with other researchers and manage time between multiple projects
 	* A team player with a sense of humor
 	* Collaboration and creativity
 	* An ability to follow direction well
 	* Strategic thinking that is opportunistic and anticipatory.
 
To be considered for this position, the candidate must possess the following qualifications:
 	* AMaster?s degree in demography, international affairs, development policy, public health, or related social science field
 	* 5-7 years of experience working in international health and development
 	* A demonstrated ability to analyze demographic trends and to use that analysis to determine strategic opportunities for program development, advocacy and/or policy application
 	* Overseas field experience in reproductive health or development preferred
 	* Proficiency in French or Spanish and experience writing funding proposals are a plus.
