Position Summary

The Research Scientist conducts independent research studies and manages
complex research projects related to population projections and demographic
statistical analyses for the Hobby Center. This includes: 
- Developing small area population projections for special groups; 
- Constructing and preparing statistical analysis of demographic and other
large data-sets using primarily SAS; 
- Providing programming support in the development of population
projections; 
- Obtaining and evaluating existing data sets for consistency, errors, and
limitations; 
- Producing output (reports, tables, figures) based upon project specific
needs; 
- Documenting steps taken and proofing/crosschecking results; 
- Assisting in the preparation of analytical results in the form of project
related reports; 
- Communicating findings by producing reports and tables, writing research
findings in forms appropriate for applied data publications and professional
publications outlets in demography, sociology, geography, economics,
statistics, psychology, public policy and related areas; and presenting at
conferences.  

Education Required

PhD or other Doctoral Degree  

Demography, sociology, or other social science discipline with a
quantitative focus OR computer science, statistics, or related field.  

OR 

Master's Degree in demography, sociology, or other social science discipline
with a quantitative focus OR computer science, statistics, or related field
with a total of three years of related research experience.

- Strong SAS data step skills. 
- Strong written and oral English-language skills. 
- The ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced multitasking environment.
- Strong skills in using descriptive statistical procedures. 
- Advanced knowledge in Excel. 
- Skill in writing technical reports. Familiarity with SAS programming
language. 
- Advanced analytical and statistical skills. 
- Ability to work alone or as part of a project team.  

Education Preferred

PhD. in Demography, Sociology, or other social science discipline with a
quantitative focus OR computer science, statistics, or related field with
experience working with socioeconomic data.  

Experience Preferred

Four or more years experience in developing population projections or
estimates. 
- Extensive experience working with large data-sets (such as U.S. Census and
administrative data-sets). 
- Three years experience working with SAS. 
- Experience working with the design and maintenance of relational
databases.  

License/Certification Preferred

 

Other Skills Preferred

Experience with Stata or SQL

Description of job responsibility/duty:
