Postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern--please post/distribute

NIDA-Funded Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Prenatal Exposure and Emergence of Developmental Psychopathology
Department of Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern University in Chicago

We are recruiting for a two year postdoctoral research position beginning in
summer, 2011 (start date flexible). The position is supported by the
NIDA-funded "Developmental Substrates" Study, which is jointly directed by
Lauren Wakschlag, PhD a developmental/clinical scientist at Northwestern
University and Kimberly Espy, PhD, a developmental cognitive neuroscientist
at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This translational study is focused
on modeling pathways from prenatal tobacco exposure to cigarette smoke to
emergent disruptive behavior. A centerpiece of the study is its strong
emphasis on state-of-the-art measurement including integration of biologic
and self-reported smoking data and a suite of direct assessments of behavior
and neurocognitive functioning developed for preschool age children by the
PI team. Primary aims include developmentally-sensitive characterization of
phenotype and information-processing patterns, examining the complex
interface of genetic susceptibility and exposure (combining molecular and
behavior genetic approaches) and testing the role of parenting in these
pathways. The individual will join the translational investigative team,
which, in addition to the PIs, includes molecular, statistical, and behavior
geneticists, methodologists, clinical neuroscientists and a
multidisciplinary group of postdoctoral fellows.

We are seeking an individual with training in developmental science and
strong quantitative skills, focused on measuring and modeling developmental
pathways. Primary responsibilities will be data analysis and manuscript
preparation, including both first- authored and collaborative papers. The
position will provide excellent experience and exposure to management of
large scale, longitudinal investigations and advanced methods of data
analysis. Dr. Wakschlag will serve as primary mentor with ample
opportunities for interaction and collaboration with Dr. Espy and the
broader investigative team.

This two-year position is intended for individuals pursuing a research
career. Candidates should have demonstrated research experience/training in
early childhood and/or developmental psychopathology and excellent
quantitative skills. Completion of the doctorate prior to the start of the
position is required. Competitive salary and benefits.

The fellowship will be based in the Department of Medical Social Sciences
(MSS) at Northwestern University in Chicago. MSS provides a unique home for
applied researchers who integrate biomedical and social science approaches
to improvement of health (for details see www.mss.northwestern.edu). Its
defining features are an emphasis on interdisciplinary research and a
strongly collaborative orientation. MSS provides rich resources for
conducting research, including a broad scientific portfolio with multiple,
well-characterized cohorts across the lifespan, psychometric/biostatistical
and health informatics cores, expertise in multi-level assessment methods
and collaborative relationships across Northwestern's biomedical and social
sciences campuses.

To apply; email materials (including a vita, three letters of
recommendation, and a statement of research interests and career goals) to
Dr. Wakschlag c/o Rebekah Abel (r-abel at northwestern.edu). Applicants will be
considered until the position is filled. Northwestern is an Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
