The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS)
and the American Institutes for Research (AIR) are
pleased to announce the creation of a joint postdoctoral
fellowship program focused on problems and issues
arising from research activities that entail the design
and analysis of complex surveys, as well as lead to
proposals for new projects. The initial term of appointment
will for two years, beginning in the summer or
fall of 2011.
Potential contexts for the research include education
(AIR and NISS are partners in operation of the
Education Statistics Services Institute and the NAEP
Education Statistics Services Institute, which support
the National Center for Education Statistics), health
(a strength of AIR) and Project TALENT (see www.
projecttalent.org). Anticipated research emphases
include sample design, statistical methods, analysis
of complex sample data, longitudinal surveys, modelbased
methods, multi-mode surveys, imputation,
nonresponse, and data confidentiality.
The NISS-AIR Postdoctoral Fellow will be appointed
by NISS, and will be located at AIR facilities in
Washington, DC. He or she will be mentored by NISS
Assistant Director Lawrence Cox, NISS Director Alan
Karr and statistical and domain scientists from AIR,
and will be part of the nationwide AIR community
as well the Washington- and Research Triangle Park,
NC-centered NISS community. For more information

Applicants must have received, or expect to complete,
a doctorate in 2006 or later. Women and members of
under-represented groups are particularly encouraged
to apply. Criteria for selection include demonstrated
research ability in statistics or a relevant scientific
discipline, interest in high-impact survey research,
strength in computation, commitment to collaborative
research, and excellent skills in verbal and written
communication. The initial salary is $80,000 per year.

background, research experience and publications;
and (3) a dissertation abstract. These items must
