Aloha,

In these days of bad economic news and limited options it is with great
pleasure that I send this position announcement to you. I am hoping that you
will see fit to forward it to your faculty and graduate students as an
opportunity that may be of interest to them or those they know. The
University of Hawaii is competitive with mainland schools in terms of
salaries and benefits. The University of Hawaii at Manoa is the flagship
institution of the University of Hawaii System. It is a Carnegie Research
Intensive university with the natural laboratory of our multi-ethnic state,
the Pacific Islands, and is a doorway to Asia in terms of collaborations and
study opportunities. Our state is home to approximately 1.3 million people
from everywhere, so much so that there truly is no majority population in
terms of race or ethnicity and the Aloha Spirit is alive and well,
especially as you venture away from the tourist areas of Waikiki. The
University is located in the hills of Manoa above Waikiki and is a botanical
wonder to say the least. It is home to the East West Center, a crossroad for
intellectual discussion and collaboration between Asia and America, it
houses several institutes specifically focusing on the cultures of Japan,
Okinawa, Korea, China, and more, and is a Land Grant, Sea Grant and Space
Grant institution as well. The Manoa Campus is primarily a commuter campus
although it has many dormitories for neighbor island students and the East
West Center housing for international students. In total the campus has
about 23,000 students.

The Department of Sociology is part of the College of Social Sciences and is
housed in a 1970s vintage tower, occupying the second floor. We have about
350 undergraduate majors and 80 Graduate students of whom about 20 are in
the Master of Arts program and the rest are in the PhD program. While our
undergraduate program is mainly local and mainland US students, the graduate
program is a bit over 50% international with strong representation from
Asian nations. Students in the MA and PhD programs have four main areas of
concentration in which to study: Medical Sociology and Aging; Criminology;
Race and Ethnicity; and, Comparative Sociology of Asia and the Pacific. We
have 19.5 FTE positions but with the recession and recent retirements are
currently operating at 15.0 FTE. In addition, through associations within
the College we have faculty from Womens Studies, Ethnic Studies, American
Studies, and Political Science offering cross-listed courses to our
students.

Sorry for the long preamble but I never know how much people know or do not
know about Hawaii and the University. I thank you (mahalo) for your
assistance in disseminating this position announcement.
