============
Dear Colleagues,

Please see the below job ad.

Qualitative Research Associate (Two Positions) We are seeking two skilled
qualitative researchers with deep knowledge of one or several social science
fields to work on a 3-year, NIH funded study of a novel coaching-based
intervention to assist the development of biomedical PhD students toward
academic careers. In particular, the study will test the hypothesis that
such an intervention can ultimately lead to increased ethnic, racial and
gender diversity among biomedical faculty. The study will use a randomized
controlled trial design with two cohorts of PhD students (160 experimental
and an equal number of controls) and 16 Faculty Coaches. Students and
Coaches will be drawn from across the U.S. (abstract link below):

The Qualitative Research Associates¹ primary role will be to work with the
Principal Investigator to design and conduct the study of: the creation of
the coaching intervention; the evolution of the student, coach and
student/coach communities; the influence of the program activities on
students and coaches; the impact of the model on student career intentions
and plans. Qualitative Research Associates will also contribute to the
design of the intervention, emphasizing links to appropriate social theory.
The intervention and the study of it will draw upon multiple social science
theories as they relate to the developmental process through which PhD
students evolve into scientists and begin to choose among career options.
These theories include: Social Cognitive Career Theory; Communities of
Practice; Identity Development; and Cultural Capital. The Research
Associates will become members of our group of seven qualitative and social
science researchers who are conducting both basic and applied research
focused on the overall career development and decision-making of young
scientists. Information on two of our other studies can be found at the
links below.
