Researcher at the Centre for Survey Design and Methodology (Mannheim, Germany.)

The European Social Survey (ESS) is looking for a Researcher f/m (TVL-13) (part 
time:
75%), initial period of 2 years, starting as soon as possible) to work in the 
central
coordination and monitoring of fieldwork in the European Social Survey
(http://www.europeansocialsurvey.org/).
The job is located at GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in 
Mannheim,
Germany.

Deadline for applications: 26 February 2010

The successful applicant will work as a member of the Central Coordinating Team 
of
the European Social Survey (ESS). He/she will discuss fieldwork strategies with 
the
national teams in charge of conducting the ESS, provide guidance on various 
aspects
of data collection (e.g. on how to achieve high response rates and how to 
minimise
nonresponse bias), monitor fieldwork progress, and analyse compliance with the 
survey
specifications in the countries participating in the ESS. Applicants should
demonstrate a keen interest in issues of data quality and comparability in
cross-national surveys. The successful applicant is expected to advance the 
knowledge
of quality issues in cross-national data collection by own research activities.
Candidates will be given the opportunity to work on their PhD thesis.

Applicants should have a degree in a field of clear relevance for survey 
research,
expertise in survey methodology, and experience in planning and conducting
large-scale (preferably face-to-face) surveys. Proficiency in the English 
language is
required as well as good communication and organisation skills, the ability to 
work
as a member of an international team and the willingness to travel. Experience 
with
the design and implementation of international social surveys and familiarity 
with
the European Social Survey are of advantage.
