Subject: Job opportunity in the Bay Area for someone with PhD

Folks:

I got the following email recently from Mary Visher who works at MDRC a
private research organization that does work on schools located in
Oakland. If interested, please go ahead and get in touch with her.

We are looking to hire an analyst and I wondered if you might know of a
graduate student or recent PhD who might be interested in applying.

Here's a link to our website www.mdrc.org <http://www.mdrc.org>.

We are looking for someone who either recently got their PhD or is about
to. Other qualifications for a sociology person would include:
> - Solid quantitative skills
>
> - Interest in working in public policy research rather than academia
>
> - Interest in working in the Bay Area or New York
>
> - Interest in education, K-12 through postsecondary.

Quantitative skills needed to analyze experimental data are not too
advanced, since we basically just compare means of the program and control
groups to see if a program had an effect. Well, that's oversimplifying, we
do run models to control for any baseline differences and do some other
stuff too. On the other hand, we are very exacting and conservative in our
thinking about design and analysis (for example, we declare ahead of time
which subgroups we will analyze so as not to appear like we are fishing) so
we love new hires who are well trained and appreciate methodological rigor.
