*Abstract*
Using longitudinal data from the six largest metropolitan areas of Brazil,
I present estimates of
racial fluidity and inequality across the earnings distribution between
the years 2002 and 2012. I find that
racial inequality is highest at the top income quantiles, that it has
legitimately decreased over that decade
because of improvements in income distribution (and not because of racial
reclassification), and that
between 5 % and 50 % of the sample have changed their race over nine months
– depending on the
year and on one’s position in the income distribution. Using counterfactual
simulations, I also show that,
despite substantive racial fluidity, inequality estimates between whites
and nonwhites would be between
8 % and 15 % higher than what was indeed observed, if only those who did
not change their racial
classification were considered in the calculation of the racial gap.
