Please join us for a Demography Brown Bag Presentation. At noon on
Wednesday, March 14, Magali Barbieri (UC Berkeley and Institut national
d'études démographiques) will present, "The contribution of drug-related
deaths to the US disadvantage in mortality."
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to measure the effect of drug poisoning on
the gap in life expectancy between the United States and other high-income
countries. The results of the analysis based on a combination of data from
the Human Mortality Database and from the World Health Organization for 13
countries indicate that the severity of the drug epidemic appears to be
specific to the United States and to contribute to the country shortfall
in mortality, especially for working-age adults.Iin 2014, the drug crisis
accounted for 10-15% of the overall United States disadvantage in
mortality, but up to 38% for working-aged men. Except for cancer, for
which mortality tends to be lower in the United States than in the
comparison countries, all diseases and, for young adults, injuries from
traffic accidents and homicides also contributed. So to better understand
the causes underlying the epidemic, future research should focus on
factors particular to the United States
